Have you ever watched your life crumble bit by bit, completely powerless to stop it? My name is Israa, and I'm displaced from Gaza. I never imagined I'd be sharing my family's story this way. But when your world shrinks to a tent, and survival becomes your only goal, you start to hope that someone will listen. I'm also a mother of three. Every day, they need food, clean water, clothes, and the most basic necessities every child deserves, yet I can't provide them. It breaks my heart to see them growing up surrounded by war, hunger, and fear, instead of safety, joy, and beautiful childhood memories. They've spent their entire childhood under the shadow of destruction, and as a mother, there's no greater pain than feeling helpless in the face of your children's suffering. We've been living under a brutal war for almost two years. My family has been displaced more than 13 times. We've lost our home, our safety, and any semblance of normalcy. Today we live in a tent, separated from the sky only by a thin cloth, with no electricity or clean water, and barely enough food. Everything is incredibly expensive. A few vegetables or a bag of flour cost more than we can afford. Medicine? Out of reach. Clean water? Scarce. We're not just living; we're fighting for survival. But we don't just want to survive. We want to live. To go out. To find safety. To live our lives without suffering, without high prices, without scarcity, without annihilation. That's why I'm asking for your help. A tip for users of our experimental instance mementomori.social: You can enable the algorithmic "For you" feed from the top right corner of the Home feed. When you turn it on, it will instantly switch to a ranked feed that prioritizes posts based on who you follow, who you comment on, and what you like or boost. If you also toggle on "Include posts from people you don't follow," you'll see trending content across the Fediverse based on your interests. Unlike Trending tab, For you -feed is personal. The logic is similar to pre-Musk Twitter but user-focused and not corporate-owned. The Trending tab remains unchanged, and /explore shows posts from roughly the past 6-12 hours, with a strong focus on the most recent ones. A post that gets massive engagement might stick around a bit longer, but most cycle out within half a day. Your own For you page changes every time you click the menu, refresh the page, or return. This is ongoing, experimental work. In an official statement, the Peace Council said: “There is no place for UNRWA in the new Gaza; we are turning the page on the cycle of perpetual aid dependency and conflict. The people of Gaza deserve better. ‼️‼️‼️😡 This is not fair. 👎 For us in Gaza, UNRWA is not just an organization or a name mentioned in the news. It has been an integral part of our lives for decades. We were educated in its schools, treated in its clinics, and it has been a lifeline for thousands of families in the most dire circumstances. For over seventy years, it has witnessed the Nakba of our people and the ongoing suffering of refugees. Today, as we endure one of the most severe humanitarian crises, millions of Palestinians still depend on its services for survival. History cannot be erased by abolishing UNRWA's role, nor can the memory of displacement or the needs of the people be obliterated by a mere declaration. We stand in full solidarity with UNRWA and with all who believe that the people of Gaza and Palestinian refugees deserve life and dignity, not to be left alone to face hunger, displacement, and destruction. When I used to hear that someone had developed early-onset Alzheimer's disease, I would feel profound sorrow and heartbreak for them. I would often wonder: How could they possibly live the rest of their life while trapped in such a condition? Today, however, I find myself wishing that I had Alzheimer's—not because I take this illness lightly, but because I can no longer bear the weight of my memories. Every time I remember what my life was like before this genocide, and compare it to what it has become today, I am overwhelmed by a pain and anguish that tear me apart from within. I don't want to remember anything anymore. I don't want my memories to keep bringing back everything I have lost, everything that has been destroyed, and everything that has been stolen from my life. #NRC is among the most respected Dutch newspapers and their setting up a #mastodon server is a beacon on the path to a democratic #DigitalCommons Short term it shows it is indeed possible for any modest organization not to be hostage to remote techbro overlords. Longer term it means probing more seriously into how a decent new digital economy could work. Each profession (from journalists, to retailers and taxi drivers) must figure this. People return to the ruins of their homes, desperately searching for anything, anything at all, no matter how small, that can reconnect them to the memories of the homes destroyed by Israeli airstrikes carried out with U.S. support.
