Afternoon all!
Been a busy week travelling for work, followed by a busy weekend with the local Beavers group at Poultons Park (a local theme park). I am now absolutely shattered and thinking about ordering take-out for dinner.

I'm a former videogames journalist and critic that specialised in MMOs and online games.
These days, gaming sits alongside parenting and family life. I still clock up time in WoW, FFXIV and EVE, but I'm also on mobile with Genshin Impact too.
I'm also regularly playing Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons, and I've got into miniature painting (mostly Warhammer 40K).

Based on current estimates, we’re probably looking at 3-4 hours of downtime to migrate the Postgres database to the new server, but there will undoubtedly be a performance improvement as a result.
- 1 hour to generate the backup
- 30 minutes to transfer 30GB of compressed (gzip) data to the new server
- 1 hour to load it into the new server
- 30 mins of config update and testing
I’m doing a dress rehearsal at the moment to do some checks on the health of the export before we schedule it
Morning all.
Today I'm feeling the after-effects of having a flu vaccination. Very lethargic with aching joints.
On the flip side, I managed to get the remaining S3 content deleted, the buckets closed, and the service cancelled. Yay for saving money!
I'm doing some Postgres migration tests at the moment in readiness of the move, but there will be some downtime, so I'm also prepping up the ugliest maintenance page known to earth. I'm going to use a simple tweak to the nginx config to enable it
Oh, forgot to mention, but OVH (our planned new host) just pushed their server pricing up 70%.
This is going to require some careful replanning to make sure we don't end up crippled by pricing during the migration.
I'm going to reconfigure some of the infrastructure to use a greater number of smaller servers - more management overhead, but cheaper.
Morning all!
It's the end of the week, which means a morning of training followed by an afternoon of reports.
Yay me!
We've had about 30 minutes of downtime earlier today, after the platform monitoring tool alerted me of an outage - so at least that's working!
Unfortunately the server itself needed to be rebooted (not just the docker containers), which caused issues of its own when trying to restore service.
Clearing out the old S3 buckets with the old host so that I can delete them.
Yes, I figured that running s3cmd rm was going to be quicker than setting a lifecycle expiration and hoping I got my XML syntax right...
So far, my small town (120,000 people has)
and soon a Wing Stop.
And that's not counting the other fast food places with chicken on the menu.
How much poultry can one town eat?
A post I hoped I'd never have to write.
An online friend I'd never met, and yet whose impact could be seen across the community, like ripples on a lake.
A soul I wish I'd known better than I did.
A silence that roars like a tempest.
Tonight, I'm going to cry, and drink, and probably curse.
Damn it all.
So, I got #FFXIV on the Switch 2.
I couldn’t use the free trial against my existing account, so I ended up getting the heavily discounted bundle.
I now realise two things:
I have completely forgotten how to play bard after quitting Dawntrail at 95.
I have no idea how to play with a controller
If anyone has any guides or blogs on this, I’d love to see them!
At least Gpose still works ;)

So, Apple hiked the price of the Apple TV 4K. The 128GB model went from £169 to an eye watering £249!
(the more expensive model also has Thread for home automation and Ethernet for more reliable streaming)
That felt excessive. So I looked for retailers still using the old RRP.
Most are sold out.
So then, to EBay. A highly rated seller is selling excess stock from a TV venture. £130. And EBay give me 30% off too!
Arrived today. Brand new. Win.
So this is what I ended up buying for the StarCraft tabletop game. Super pleased with the new sprues!
I need a new TV stand/unit thing.
Our existing IKEA laminated chipboard monstrosity was built for an era of bluray players and slimline consoles, with drawers underneath for storage.
I now want to use it to hold all our living room electronics, including a chunky wifi router and an even bigger Xbox Series X.
The snag is, there are no easy options. Everything has alcoves that are too narrow, or drawer space where I need cupboards.
It’s infuriating.
I have no idea what the weather is doing today, but I don’t like it.
Well, I didn’t expect to see a coffin at the expo today…
