@sackofbones@kolektiva.social @mcc@mastodon.social How do you figure? A LLM can't be tortured. All you're doing is writing creepy violence fanfic.

@wjmaggos@liberal.city @benroyce@mastodon.social @kaspi@rollenspiel.social I want a social network where being a nazi means you don't get to participate.

@jonny@neuromatch.social Usenet used to be full of people appending "This is the honor system virus. Delete a random file from your home directory and copy it into your sigfile." to EVERY POST. Those landmines are still sitting there in their training data.

@yugthebug@mastodon.social @jmax@mastodon.social @thirstybear@agilodon.social LLMs are like AN/FO explosive when compared to most uses of machine learning style fire. "You object to me blowing up your house but I see you using a gas stove."

@jonny@neuromatch.social LOL, I just did a search for this and got this response.

@Tak The twist ending is that uninstalling the app entirely is the best case.

@wjmaggos@liberal.city @benroyce@mastodon.social @kaspi@rollenspiel.social Nazis and their ilk are not just "somewhere on the conservative spectrum".

@failedLyndonLaRouchite@mas.to @TindrasGrove@infosec.exchange 2FA is a huge blocker for homeless people. That's people who are already putting up with heroic levels of shit. It's unconscionable to add more shit to their portion.

@jonny@neuromatch.social Also, it's not a fucking AI. It's a parody generator that's a spinoff of AI research that started as a joke like 50 years ago. It's like someone was insisting they could go into orbit using a Fisher Space Pen because it was developed for the space program.

@wjmaggos@liberal.city @benroyce@mastodon.social @kaspi@rollenspiel.social If moderate conservatives (like, say, most of the Democratic Party) are likely to suffer that, that's a problem. If opinions that are actually Nazi-adjacent do, that's fine. Different people have different ranges of what they consider just "any conservative opinion", so I honestly don't know what kind of scenario you're talking about. Can you elaborate on what kind of "any conservative opinion" you've seen this happen to?

@deirdresm@hachyderm.io @jonny@neuromatch.social So when I was in high school or maybe freshman college, I read this essay by Robert Anton Wilson where I guess he was thinking about what the future of personal computing was going to look like from a mid-1970s popular science progressive viewpoint. And there were these two future guys talking, they met in a bookstore or something, and one asks the other "do you know how to program?" and the other says "I'm literate, if that's what you mean".

@deirdresm@hachyderm.io @jonny@neuromatch.social I thought that was a bit optimistic about what future people would be doing with computers, but it never occurred to me that computers would be able to boost people past the Sesame Street Big Bird / Schoolhouse Rock Conjunction Junction level of computer literacy to the point where they could do useful things with computers without having the faintest idea of what the computer equivalent of a steering wheel was.

@tehfishman@ioc.exchange @Dio9sys@haunted.computer "No sweat" (mops forehead).

@Social_Recluse2@mastodon.social @benroyce@mastodon.social Vernor Vinge "Rainbow's End"

@flyingsaceur@ioc.exchange Tru64 on a Multia emulated by simulated nanobes in Permutation City.

@LeBonk@wetdry.world @ScriptFanix@maly.io @jmax@mastodon.social @TimWardCam@c.im @yugthebug@mastodon.social @thirstybear@agilodon.social I just call them LLMs. AI is a field of research. LLMs are a spin-off, but they're not AI in the science fiction sense anymore than a Fisher Space Pen is a rocket just because it's a spin-off of the space industry.

@ScriptFanix@maly.io @jmax@mastodon.social @TimWardCam@c.im @yugthebug@mastodon.social @thirstybear@agilodon.social Don't refer to any of them as AI, just because they're lying doesn't mean you have to lie too.

@wjmaggos@liberal.city @benroyce@mastodon.social @kaspi@rollenspiel.social If they're not pushing it on anyone how do you identify them? If they are being evangelical Zionists or Nazis or whatever, then that's what they are.

@benroyce@mastodon.social @wjmaggos@liberal.city @kaspi@rollenspiel.social Yeh, I got permabanned from a sub on reddit for reposting an article that used expletives in its title, but I kind of don't mind if people want their forum to be a bit more straight-laced than I care to conform to.

@wjmaggos@liberal.city @Lazarou@mastodon.social @gabboman I miss Usenet before Cantor and Seigel.

@davidgerard@circumstances.run TIL "Iron Lung" and I kind of wish I hadn't googled it.

Man if 25 year old me griping about Apple being stingy with the 128K of RAM the original Macintosh shipped with could hear me griping about Apple being stingy shipping Macs with only 8 GB today.

@fatsam@mstdn.social I think we're somewhere in the negative time range of the Gartner hype cycle.

@fwaggle@moodoo.org @NanoRaptor@bitbang.social My first name is the same as my father's, so everyone who knew me in Australia called me James or Jamie, and I was like okay that's practical, but it's not my name. When I moved to the United States I decided that I was going to be Peter.

@AnachronistJohn@zia.io @jonny@neuromatch.social Yes, I was amazed that they turned the "Good Times" virus hoax into a real possibility.

@kimcrawley@zeroes.ca @davidgerard@circumstances.run Ironically, AFAIK the only generative automation involved in "Spot" is the optional uplink to Gemini. The robot itself is all adhoc bespoke code.

@kimcrawley@zeroes.ca @davidgerard@circumstances.run Oh, it's certainly evocative. I just occasionally have people tell me confidently that the likes of Spot and Atlas are proof that LLMs can do more than play with words. So the association hits me in the OCD.

@kinsale42@mstdn.games @acm_redfox@jawns.club @ajh@indieweb.social @NanoRaptor@bitbang.social LOL Status: UNCONFIRMED Blow that for a joke.

@joe@f.duriansoftware.com @xan@xantronix.social @beka_valentine@kolektiva.social It never *got* out of demo quality. When it finally died it was still transitioning between two incompatible competing TCP/IP stacks.

@joe@f.duriansoftware.com @beka_valentine@kolektiva.social I am disappoint, it's not actually BeOS.

@nixCraft@mastodon.social Meanwhile I once changed Linux distributions because the one I was using didn't let me make the initramfs large enough without going through more shenanigans than I felt was worth my while.

@jiub@not.an.evilcyberhacker.net What does vim have to do with it? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nvi

@ewos1986@norden.social @MostlyHarmless@thecanadian.social Yeah I remember, I spent most of my time reading science fiction where people had things like smartphones and I was like man I really want one of those. And you know, I really wouldn't want to go back.

@thevhswizard@retro.pizza Yeh, reminds me of Usenet, except without the ease of archiving.

@isotopp@infosec.exchange 25 year old me had 512K in his Amiga. I'm still on my Intel mini with 64GB because I can't justify the cost of upgrading to an ARM Mac with that much RAM.

@squalouJenkins@fosstodon.org @kasperd@westergaard.social @argv_minus_one@mastodon.sdf.org @mcc@mastodon.social Is there any equivalent to 'sudo dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/sda'?

@xan@xantronix.social @joe@f.duriansoftware.com @beka_valentine@kolektiva.social Oh, BeOS would have been a disaster for Apple. I actually used it and it was half-baked at best and C++ was a really lousy choice for an OS API.

@redsad@ohai.social All my life I have met progressive old people and conservative young people. In Berkeley in the '70s and '80s I was seeing protests by Reaganista students in Sproul Plaza. Some people were born Republican.

@kinsale42@mstdn.games @acm_redfox@jawns.club @ajh@indieweb.social @NanoRaptor@bitbang.social Firefox is gratuitously stupid, it does not retain the form tags on the form that you filled out, it tries to parse the form and reassembles what it thinks your full name is, and then breaks that apart again when it prefills a new form. This breaks every possible best practice and heuristic that they could possibly be pretending to follow, and completely ignores the "Falsehoods" document.

@TimWardCam@c.im @ScriptFanix@maly.io @jmax@mastodon.social @yugthebug@mastodon.social @thirstybear@agilodon.social Organic, chemical free. I guess it's some kind of crystallized energy.

@fesshole@mastodon.social Assigned Cop At Birth.

@LapTop006@aus.social @mattblaze@federate.social Turn around. Those bolts at the base of the towers are amazing. There used to be a picture of me as a small child sitting on one. I think it's been lost a long time ago.

@jschauma@mstdn.social In the '80s I had secretaries and janitors at work where I was a sysadmin coming to me for help with the shell scripts they had written of their own initiative to make some of the routine stuff they had to do easier. Only a few lines of code, but they did understand what they were doing.

@PCOWandre@jauntygoat.net Yep

@isotopp@infosec.exchange I have been griping about this for years, and yes the Neo is still 8GB which is criminal and rude. 16GB is marginal but OK for now, except the lack of upgrade options is evil and rude.

@jarinks@mstdn.social @TimWardCam@c.im @ScriptFanix@maly.io @jmax@mastodon.social @yugthebug@mastodon.social @thirstybear@agilodon.social Try to imagine all life as you know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light. Total protonic reversal.

@issyl0@ruby.social Damn, sometimes people do stuff that makes me kinda tear up.

@wordshaper@weatherishappening.network @tess@mastodon.social @xgranade@wandering.shop Meanwhile call centers in South Asia have been using them in summoning rituals and anyone with more than 2% Fae blood ends up spending 12 hour shifts they don't remember in a containment circle running a chatline.

@mudasobwa@mastodon.social @baldur@toot.cafe

the very first example of the auth function implemented as a stub is a forgery.

What do you mean by that?
