"#Toronto Police are investigating suspected #antisemitic attacks on #Jewish businesses after shattered windows were discovered Sunday morning at two locations of the Jewish-owned #KivasBagelBar chain.
The damage was discovered when the locations opened Sunday morning and is believed to have occurred overnight between Saturday and Sunday.
At around 8:12 a.m., police received a report that a window had been struck by #gunfire at the #bakery’s location at Yonge Street and St. Clair Avenue.
Police confirmed that evidence of #firearm use was found, including a #bullethole in the business’s front window.
Then at around 8:30 a.m., police were called to another #Kivas location on Steeles Avenue West near Bathurst Street, shattered front window was also found there, although police found no evidence of gunfire."
Looks like my democratic state party platform has officially adopted the position that antisemitism in our state is caused by the actions of another country not *checks notes* antisemites in our state.
Cool cool cool.
"A #German #Jewish woman was forced to remove her #StarofDavid necklace at a security checkpoint before being permitted to enter a courtroom in northern Germany — where ironically a man was on trial for excluding #Jews from his place of business.
The incident on Monday raised concerns over hostility toward Jews in public spaces, amid a wave of incidents in Germany and across #Europe of people being denied access to places and services for being Jewish or #Israeli.
On Monday, #KerenStopka was asked before entering the #Flensburg District Court in the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein to remove her Star of David necklace so as not to “disrupt” the proceedings, in order to be allowed to observe the case.
“I had to remove my entire Star of David necklace and hand it over. I wasn’t even permitted to keep it under my shirt or in my pocket."
"#ComicCon attendees packed a panel room to learn about the often-overlooked role that #Jewish #creators have played in shaping the #comicbook industry.
#MarkSZaid, Esq., an Overstreet #Comic #Book Price Guide advisor, comic book #historian, #author, and #creator of #GIsRabbi); #DannyFingeroth, former #Marvel #editor and #writer, author of Disguised as #ClarkKent: #Jews, #Comics, and the Creation of the #Superhero; and Dr. #AndrewFogel, historian of popular culture and author of #Superman’s Jaw presented an engaging PowerPoint lecture titled “The Jewish Experience in Comics: Characters and Creators.”
The presentation explored how the Jewish identities and experiences of many of comics’ most influential creators shaped the stories they told and the #heroes they created."
I typically avoid stories like this. Someone else will post about it and its difficult to get at the, less obvious, core issue.
People are going to blather on about how this isn't antisemitism it's mental illness and on one level they're gonna be right.
But there is a reason that so many mentally ill people in the west have antisemitic fixations that lead to violence and that is because Jew hating is baked into western civilization. So no, this stabber isnt the problem to address.
But he is a fucking symptom.
"#NewYorkCity police are investigating a pair of #stabbings near #CentralPark as a possible #hatecrime, #policecommissioner #JessicaTisch said Thursday.
The suspect, #RaulMorales, allegedly #stabbed a 57-year-old #Asian man in the back with a knife, then stabbed a 50-year-old #Jewish man in the torso with a screwdriver, according to a #NewYork police department spokesperson. #Morales allegedly yelled “#AllahuAkbar” before the stabbings, police said."

"As #StevenPressman makes clear in his new #documentary #film, Dust Bowls and #Jewish Souls: Another Side of #WoodyGuthrie, there was another side to #Guthrie and his #songs. As his son, #ArloGuthrie, explains in the film: “My father studied #Judaism and he knew something about it. He never exchanged his faith for something else; he added to his faith. And that something else he added … was a Jewish identity. He understood what that meant traditionally, historically, culturally. And he knew more about Judaism than my zeyde. And so, my bubbe was thrilled.”
It just so happens that Arlo’s bubbe — his grandmother — was acclaimed #Yiddish #poet and #lyricist #AlizaGreenblatt. When Guthrie married Aliza’s daughter, #MarjorieMazia (née #Greenblatt), the two chose to raise their children in #ConeyIsland..."
"In #medieval #Europe, #Jewish scholars were summoned before #Christian authorities and forced to defend the #Talmud against claims that it said things it didn’t. The proceedings, called disputations, were rarely fair and not exactly voluntary.
#HenryRaz, 17, is a #highschool junior in #MarinCounty trying to counter a flood of online videos that claim the Talmud exposes secrets Jewish leaders want to keep hidden and permits #Jews to deceive and kill non-Jews. To #Raz, it looks like the same dynamic as the medieval disputations, adapted to the age of social media algorithms. That’s why he started a #YouTube channel called “#Disputations.”

"This past Friday was a beautiful day in central #NewJersey. My wife decided to take the kids to a nearby park for a few hours -- a friend had recommended it.
The park did not disappoint. My #children were having a wonderful time. One of my sons was on the swings with his younger brother nearby when a group of ten 14-year-old boys rode over on their bikes and began bothering them.
At first, it seemed like nothing more than typical teenage mischief. When one of my older children stepped in and asked them what they were doing, the boys backed off.
But within a few minutes they returned. This time, with words.
“Heil #Hitler.”
“Dirty #Jew.”
My children were stunned.
Growing up in a predominantly #Jewish community, they had never personally encountered #antisemitism. To them, antisemitism belonged to history books and faraway places. It was something associated with the #Holocaust, with Communist #Russia, with attacks in #Paris and #London. Not here."

It would be exciting to stop begging for inclusion and just suck it up and move on.
"#Jewish #writers say they are dismayed to learn that one of the nation’s largest free outdoor #literary festivals is scheduled to take place during the two days of #RoshHashanah, September 12 and 13.
#PrintersRowLitFest, an outdoor #bookfestival that draws thousands of #authors and $book lovers to the streets of #Chicago’s South Loop, announced the festival’s dates in April. But only recently, amid rising concerns about #antisemitism in the #publishing world, did some Jewish authors realize the schedule conflict. This year’s Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown on Friday, Sept. 11 and ends at sundown on Sunday, Sept. 13.
#BrianBerg, a spokesman for #PrintersRow, said that scheduling difficulties caused the overlap with Rosh Hashanah."
"Most people spend their later years looking back. #HaroldGrinspoon has spent his reinventing himself.
The businessman became a #philanthropist. The philanthropist discovered #Jewish children’s #books and created #PJLibrary. In his late 80s, he became a sculptor after a cherry tree fell in his yard.
Now, as he turns 97, #Grinspoon is reflecting on the unexpected pivots that have defined both his life and his approach to Jewish giving.
Known for innovative programs like PJ Library — which engages young Jewish families with monthly deliveries of age-appropriate #childrensbooks and #music — #Grinspoon and his eponymous foundation have focused on programs that, in the spirit of the real estate business that made his fortune, build Jewish habits, institutions and relationships that he hopes will outlast him."
Hey guys! This article on antisemitic violence against Jews who aren't from Israel doesn't say anything about Israel. 🤡
Asajew bomb 😬
"#CNN anchor #ElexMichaelson raised eyebrows this week with his closing comment moderating a panel discussion on possible contenders in the 2028 #DemocraticParty presidential primary, offering his take on what might differentiate Sen. #JonOssoff (D-GA) from #Pennsylvania Gov. #JoshShapiro (D) – how #Jewish they “read” to voters.
As the Tuesday evening conversation wound down, panelist and YouTuber #EricMessersmith argued, “But on the Jewish thing, because he is Jewish, he might be the #Democrat that can thread the needle. Because even though he’s Jewish, he’s very critical of the #Israeli government, very critical of #BenjaminNetanyahu. He has credibility on that issue. So it’s possible—I think he could fill that lane in between the two extremes of the #DemocraticParty.”
#Michaelson then wrapped up the discussion, “Yeah, as a #Jew, some people read a little more Jewish than other people, and John Ossoff may not read as Jewish as Josh Shapiro does[...]"
Hannah Arrendt was nazi-fucking hack. There, I said it.
"In #HannahArendt: A Life of the Mind, #ThomasMeyer (a professor of #philosophy at #LudwigMaximilianUniversity of #Munich and #editor of a 12-volume edition of #Arendt’s #German #writings) asserts that her life and work is best understood as an attempt to move beyond the limits of an allegedly timeless philosophy - and philosophy’s preoccupation with itself - by embracing #politics, “which, in the final analysis, is the human sphere,” and the movement from thought to action and only then, back to thought.
#Meyer is acutely aware of the limitations of Arendt’s published work. She was frequently categorical, he emphasizes, and “not always consistent.” Her arguments were not always supported by footnotes or references to secondary sources. Instead of weighing all sides of an issue, she “required her readers to make a stark choice of pro or con.”
Theres a lot of fascinating dialogue happening on French fedi about antisemitism right now. Some pretty heavy arguing too. Lot less of an echo chamber and quite aggressive.
"Modern #textual #scholarship has shown that #ToledotYeshu never existed as a single, fixed #composition. Unlike the #Mishna or the #Talmud, whose textual traditions gradually stabilized through widespread printing, Toledot Yeshu remained fluid for centuries. #Scribes copied from whatever exemplars were available, frequently introducing additions, omissions, stylistic revisions, and entirely new #narrative episodes. Rather than preserving a single "original" version, the #manuscript tradition reflects a living #text continually reshaped by its transmitters.
The #Łomżamanuscript is especially noteworthy because it preserves a substantially expanded #recension. Its elaborate title-page introduction immediately distinguishes it from many simpler copies. Throughout the text, the #Hebrew is unusually polished, employing a consciously #biblical style that lends the narrative an air of #antiquity and #literary refinement."
"First off, to the #antisemites out there, I would like to commend you for your commitment to this narrative. Few groups of people would hold onto something so meaningless for so long and not seem to lose an ounce of enthusiasm for it. You truly are the excited puppies of humanity. Unfortunately, over the last one thousand years or so, the rest of us have moved on. The truth is, you just aren’t as good at this whole #antisemitism thing as you think you are. It’s just not fun to engage with you anymore. We know the talking points and rhetoric, and to be frank, it’s a bit dated and dull. Maybe I can help.
While you are clearly very good at refocusing your own demons, you are pretty terrible in your methods of attack. As #America’s Rebbitzman, I feel obligated to help you be a better #antisemite."

"[I]t wasn’t until reading #YairMintzker’s new #book, I, Wandering #Jew, that I came to appreciate another dimension of its significance, namely, its evocation of the figure of the #WanderingJew.
Originally, the Wandering Jew was an #antisemitic #trope #Christians used to explain the marginality and foreignness of #Jews in #European society. A cobbler stood at the doorstep of his #Jerusalem shop, according to the story, as Jesus labored by, hauling his burden to his death. Refusing his request for help, Jesus cursed the cobbler, who inexplicably came to be known as Ahasverus, the name of a Persian king, to live eternally in exile until the Second Coming. The Jews were thus condemned to a de-territorialized, homeless fate as Christ deniers."

"In tandem with naming Mr. #Najmi to helm the advisory committee, Mr. #Mamdani issued an #executiveorder that he said was intended to expand the pool of #judicial appointments and create a “merit-based, independent, fair, and publicly credible” process.
The executive order from Mr. Mamdani said committee membership “shall reflect the cosmopolitan population of the City of #NewYork.” Members serve four-year terms, except for members appointed at the recommendation of deans of #law schools, who serve for two years.
That promise contained in the executive order was not fulfilled, according to the four #Jewish #lawyers’ groups that signed the letter.
“To have no #Jews on the committee that’s selecting #NewYorkCity judges is pretty remarkable,” said #MatthewJKluger, the president of the #Bronx County Jewish #BarAssociation. “It certainly sends a strong message.”

"Set against the backdrop of modern #dating through the lens of the #Jewish community, the #film follows a young Jewish man’s search for love, identity, and connection during the holiday season at a time when finding the right person has never felt more complicated.
The #romanticcomedy is the feature #directorial debut of #EvanScolnick, who previously took credits on short film Background Action, about a production assistant wrangling extras for a superhero movie and taking inspiration from a stint at Marvel Studios where he worked on films such as Hawkeye.

"Investigators said a man fired some sort of #weapon at the #synagogue and shattered a #bulletproof glass door. People at the synagogue told police the suspect, identified as #RexCrofton, then flipped off the synagogue and drove away.
Police never found any evidence of bullets, and synagogue leaders believe the door was damaged by something else in his hands.
Just 10 minutes later, the #Jewish Community Center on Wyoming called APD and said a man was trying to break their #bulletproofglass door with a large metal object.
Police said Crofton can be seen on surveillance camera, hitting the door, then taking off again.
Both the synagogue and center said they have security protocols in place which helped on Tuesday, along with the quick response from APD."
"Tully Gets Hooked on #Books is a delightful new #picturebook for #frum families. #Written and #illustrated by #GoldieGolding, the #story follows Tully the worm as he travels through the forest and encounters several animal friends: Ollie Owl, Shimmy Sloth, Faigy Flamingo, and Talia Turtle.
Remarkably, each of these new friends is #reading a #book when Tully meets them, which in turn inspires him to want to #learn to #read, too."
"The 4th of July, 1776, as an act of rebellion, triggered a war. The Star Spangled Banner is a song about war (have you ever seen the full version?)
Was it inevitable? Was it necessary?
Was it as revolutionary as we like to think?
A thoughtful discussion on this week’s New Yorker Radio Hour podcast asked the question, “What did the American Revolution look like from Britain?”
More provocatively, host #DavidRemnick asked, “In the long-run, are we better off than we would have been had we remained part of the Commonwealth like #Canada, #Australia, and #NewZealand?”
I would like to suggest a #Jewish angle to this question for your #Shabbat table:
Which country has been better for #Jews and #Jewish life: the #USA, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand?
Some points to consider:"

"Over nearly two decades as a psychologist and psychoanalyst, I’ve learned that conflict, by itself, rarely destroys relationships. Marriages, families, and friendships can withstand remarkable amounts of it. What people struggle to survive is the sudden realization that love, acceptance, or belonging was more conditional than they believed.
Watching #Senator #Wiener leave the #TransMarch, I realized I had been watching versions of this same story unfold for nearly three years. In my office, among friends and colleagues, and throughout the #queer #Jewish community, I had watched people drift away from spaces they once considered home, not because they had stopped being #gay or because they had stopped being Jewish, but because they no longer knew whether they were allowed to be both."

"Across #Europe, many #Jewish #museums have seen visitor numbers drop, patrons back away and security threats rise since the fall of 2023, according to a recent report by the #Amsterdam-based Association of #European Jewish Museums, a nonprofit network of 55 institutions. The association’s members also reported online harassment, vandalism and acts of aggression against staff members.
The root of the problems, said #MirjamWenzel, the association’s chair, was that many people seem to perceive Europe’s Jewish museums as somehow tied to #Israel, when in fact they are largely publicly funded by local governments, ticket sales and sponsorships, and typically focus on the history of #Jews on the continent.
“We are being attacked as #Israeli institutions and identified with the state of Israel,” Wenzel said.
In interviews, 10 directors of Jewish museums throughout Europe said that their institutions had all felt shock waves after the #Oct7 attacks."

"For thousands of years, #Jews have wrapped #tefillin every weekday morning, paused to make a blessing before eating, and recited #Shema before bed — not because we knew that these practices were good for us from a mental and physical #health perspective, but simply because #Hashem commanded us to do them.
We don’t need #neuroscience and #medicine to validate #Torah, still it’s fascinating to see modern research uncover unexpected connections between #Jewish practice and what we’re learning about the brain, the body, and human behavior. Here are a few examples."

"On April 29, our district dedicated a #socialmedia post to #EndJewHatredDay. I didn’t even know the day existed, but I was pleasantly surprised to see them acknowledge it. The district posted a simple #bluesquare with a caption that read:
“End Jew Hatred Day is a time to reflect on the impact of hate and the responsibility we all share to foster respect and understanding in our communities.”
It felt nice to be seen and supported. But that feeling did not last long.
The comments on the fairly innocuous post were a cesspool of hate, ignorance and classic #antisemitic #tropes. There were claims that the #Jews must control the #school district and jokes about donations from #Israel and #AIPAC. There were threats of pulling children from the district. There was anti-Israel rhetoric and antisemitic slurs.
Seeing #antisemitism spelled out online is always horrifying, but sadly never shocking."
Interesting thing from the anticapitalist anticolonial left on diaspora Jews targeted over Israel. The politics will be controversial for some.
"It is an anxious time for #Jewish communities, in #Canada and beyond.
In the aftermath of the #US-#Israeli attacks on #Iran, three Jewish institutions in the Greater #Toronto Area were shot at. This comes after years of attacks on Jewish-owned small businesses, Jewish high schools, and other communal institutions.
In online threads on stories about these incidents, you can find comments like “fuck around and find out” or “violence begets violence.” To literally be Jewish, these comments imply, is to “fuck around.” And right in the heart of working class Jewish Toronto in #Downsview, #protesters are regular fixtures at a shopping centre, holding #racist signs depicting cave-lurking, hook-nosed #Jews, despite #Palestine organizers denouncing them.
For me, who grew up as a Jewish kid in North #York, it feels personal."

Theres this wild new counterpunch article out that leads with an implication that the first US secretary of defense, who was making the case against US support for a Jewish state, was murdered for it in its opening paragraphs and its pull quote, and then at the end details that he committed suicide. But if you just read the lede stuff you'd be like huh... maybe the Jews threw him out the window.
Shit is getting hot out here.
"It’s shaping up to be a pretty, pretty hot July — which means staying home in front of the #TV may be just what the doctor ordered. Luckily, there are a lot of fun #Jewish stars and shows to watch and schvitz to, from “Love Island USA,” which this season features a Jewish Gal, to #LarryDavid’s “Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness,” where every sketch is full of kvetchy Jewish energy.

"#TheCatskills may no longer be lined with sprawling resort hotels and nightly floor shows, but for one summer weekend each year, #Ellenville becomes the closest thing to a time machine.

"We helped #Jewish #creatives create support mechanisms within several professional organizations. We partnered with the #NormanLearCenter’s #Media Impact Project to conduct the most extensive study on Jewish #television representation in 25 years, giving us real data that proves our case for change.
That is why returning to the #TelevisionAcademy in 2026 felt so meaningful.
Three and a half years ago, I took a risk speaking up to explain why Jewish #inclusion mattered. This time, I walked into a room filled with #entertainment professionals who had organized, mobilized and were ready to engage with credible data about how #Jews appear, and often do not appear, on screen.
That is real progress."

The actual most interesting man in the world.
"[A]s #Morin always insisted, truth is complex. So, too, was his career, which in many ways reflects the origin story of the #French #intellectual. Born as #EdgarNahoum in #Paris in 1921, his parents were #Jewish immigrants from #Salonica, a city that had been home to #Greece’s largest Jewish community until #WorldWarII. (Nearly 90% of the community, some 54,000 men, women, and children were eventually murdered in #Nazi #deathcamps.) A precocious student, #Nahoum spent his days in libraries studying #German philosophers like #Hegel and his nights in cinemas studying French films directed by the likes of #MarcelPagnol.
Yet everything changed, including his name, come #France’s defeat and #occupation by #NaziGermany in 1940. Making his way to the Unoccupied Zone, the 20-year-old Nahoum, who had been a pacifist before the war, soon joined both the banned #CommunistParty and the #FrenchResistance."
"A suspect attempted to set #fire early Tuesday morning to a residential building populated by young #Jewish families in the #GoldersGreen neighborhood of #London.
A statement from #Shomrim said the incident unfolded when residents of a local block of apartment were suddenly awoken by a blaring fire alarm.
According to eyewitness accounts from the scene, residents witnessed a suspect deliberately igniting a fire within a communal stairwell of the building. When confronted and challenged by residents, the perpetrator immediately fled the area."
These numbers are so miniscule.
"Two #Jewish organizations registered to #lobby this year for the first time, but overall #lobbying expenses for major Jewish groups declined during the first six months of 2026 compared to the same period last year, according to a JNS review of disclosures filed with the #US #Senate."
"#Rabbi #YitzchakArama, #author of #AkeidatYitzchak, explains that the spies did not sin by describing real difficulties. The cities were indeed fortified, the nations were strong and the challenge was great. Nor was there anything wrong with presenting a complex picture. The problem began the moment they stopped fulfilling their original role.
#Moses sent them to gather information. He wanted to understand reality. In modern terms, they were sent to serve as an intelligence unit, not an investment committee. But at a certain point, the spies moved from describing the data to interpreting its meaning.
The word “but” changed everything: The land is good, but, the people are strong.
On the surface, it was only one word. In practice, it was the turning point. This, Rabbi Yitzchak #Arama explains, is the root of the failure."
"Descendants of survivors of the #Novogrudok #laborcamp in #Belarus, along with #Jewish organizations and #Holocaust remembrance groups, have expressed deep shock over the sale of the site to a private developer who plans to build a paid interactive complex depicting Jewish life in the camp.
The site, where thousands of #Jews were imprisoned during the #Nazi occupation, is considered one of the symbols of Jewish resistance during the Holocaust."
We really need to pave over all the camps and tear down the Holocaust museums before the Shoah becomes a full on amusement park.
