Just a reminder: the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the UN’s principal judicial body, ruled in July 2025 that States have an obligation to protect the environment from greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The governments of many countries are... outlaws. #climate #climatechange

"Crossing this tipping point [AMOC collapse] would not only cool north-western Europe, it would dramatically raise sea levels on the American East Coast, cause the collapse of marine ecosystems, reduce the carbon dioxide uptake of the ocean and warm the southern hemisphere even more, and it could also shift the tropical rainfall belts and disrupt the Asian monsoon. ... it takes about a thousand years for the AMOC to recover."

Funny how billionaires cheer California when it builds their markets and infrastructure, but bolt the moment a modest 5% wealth tax is proposed. If your success depends on the state, maybe your contribution shouldn’t disappear the second you’re asked to give a little back.

Blame Is the Easiest Escape

It has become common, almost reflexive, to attribute climate change to capitalism. The diagnosis feels satisfying: identify a system, condemn it, and the moral burden seems neatly assigned. Yet thi…

You know, even though i'm seventy years old, I still like to dabble in programming a bit. I just updated my intelligent query designer, so now you can run the query straight from it!

Commercial software system designers have a powerful influence on a large proportion of the population. This blog argues that every system, as well as their designers, have an overpowering social context as well. Mining this social context is the The Art in Business Systems Design.

@benlockwood@ecoevo.social It's our sociology as well; we seem to be both supporters and victims of an advertising-driven consumption and growth philosophy. Cradle to grave planning and circular economies don't seem to get much support from the common folk. #climatechange #climate

If climate crumpling gets bad enough, our population may descend to that of pre-colonial times. The technology we can muster, plus the future state of the climate, will be entirely different. We must prepare for this: it is the third pillar after adaptation and mitigation. Far too little effort is being placed into this contingency. Although the risk of a population collapse due to multiple ecosystem collapses is low, the potential damage is extremely high — even human extinction. #climate
