Do Coding Agents Reuse Existing Code or Reinvent the Wheel?

Coding agents are increasingly deployed for iterative development on real repositories, yet existing evaluation barely answers a basic question: \emph{do coding agents reuse existing code or reinvent the wheel?} The question matters: every duplicated implementation is a fix applied twice and agents produce code far faster than humans can audit, so redundancy accumulates unsupervised. Thus, we present \textbf{RepoReuse}, a multi-turn benchmark for auditing code reuse in real repositories, where r

In his essay on Salvador Dali, Orwell argued that because Dali was a repulsive human being, the right wouldn't admit that he was a great artist; conversely, because he was a great artist, the left wouldn't admit he was a repulsive human being. I'm seeing the same thing with AI: because it's unethical, one side won't acknowledge that it's useful, but because it's useful, the other side won't acknowledge that it's unethical. Time to make another cup of tea…

Atlassian Enables Default Data Collection to Train AI

Atlassian will begin collecting customer metadata and in-app content from **Jira**, **Confluence**, and other cloud products by default on **August 17, 2026**, to train its AI offerings including `Rovo` and `Rovo Dev`. The change affects roughly **300,000** customers; metadata collection is mandatory for Free, Standard, and Premium tiers and cannot be opted out on those plans. Or 0.4% (i.e., once every 250 meetings)? Do you and/or your employer have a threshold or SLA? Are you/they even thinking in those terms?

I had the privilege of reading a pre-release draft of @grimalkina@mastodon.social 's "The Psychology of Software Teams". Serendipitously, I followed it with Sarah Stein Lubrano's "Don't Talk About Politics", which is actually about the psychology of how people change their minds (or don't). The combination gave me a _lot_ to think about, and I highly recommend both.

MIT to Become Hotbed of AI Video Surveillance - Schneier on Security

It’s a lot: According to information obtained by The Tech, MIT is spending over $3 million on more than 500 AI surveillance cameras in academic buildings, residence halls, and outdoor areas along Memorial Drive. Installation of the new cameras, along with the wiring and infrastructure that will support them, began November 2025 and will likely continue until September 2026. Technical specifications for the cameras suggest that they will be capable of collecting real-time face and object classifi

RE: https://social.afront.org/@stylus/116991865079758024 There is an alternate timeline in which the Jupyter notebook was built in OpenOffice instead of in a browser, so that people could (for example) draw diagrams directly in the Office-y parts of the doc beside their embedded code cells. It wouldn't have played nicely with version control, but neither (in practice) does Jupyter's fastidious JSON and embedded images. I still wonder sometimes what kinds of coding environments would have evolved from that…

I remember reading a science fiction story in the late 70s by Poul Anderson in which an aging capitalist and an aging communist come to blows in a bar in a small town somewhere in the not-very-distant future, arguing about where it all went wrong. Turns out that as soon as solar became really, really cheap, both of their economic models just…went away, along with the belief systems they'd sustained. The younger townspeople don't even really understand what they're arguing about…

On the Correctness of Software Merge

Three-way merge tools play crucial roles in modern software development, where a developer forks a branch to make local modifications and requests it to be merged into the main branch via a "pull request." Despite its importance, the task has traditionally been defined in an intuitive manner, and the results of merge tools are often accepted without scrutiny. In this paper, we present a new structural merge tool in comparison with existing tools based on the syntactic criteria we propose for eva

Today, LLMs are spitting out shell commands that use all the available tools, because that's what their training data does. I wonder how long it will be until we see a new, more cohesive set of command-line tools that truly follow the Unix philosophy: each does exactly one thing, RISC-style, and the power comes from ever-greater composition. That, plus the "everything is structured data" philosophy of Nushell, would be an interesting future (albeit unlikely). 2/

No Edges, No Verdict: A Large-Scale Empirical Study of Declared Dependency Graphs in 78K SBOMs in the Wild

Software Bills of Materials (SBOMs) are consumed not only as component inventories but as dependency graphs: vulnerability triage, reachability filtering, and impact analysis all traverse the edges an SBOM declares. We present the first large-scale characterization of the declared dependency graph across 78,612 real-world SBOM files from the Wild SBOMs dataset (77,092 parseable). We find that the population splits into three regimes: 52.9% of SBOMs declare no edges at all (failing the NTIA minim
