German Federal Government spending on Microsoft *licenses*: 481.4 million euros (2025), 347.7 million (2024), 274.1 million (2023)

https://www.heise.de/en/background/Microsoft-Dependency-Federal-Government-Pays-near-500-Million-Euros-in-One-Year-11171050.html

How much #freeSoftware development could be funded with that money? Now, scale up to all public administrations in Germany. Now, scale up to #EU (and you could go on scaling up).

Does the current situation make sense from a purely economic point of view? #publicMoneyPublicCode

Trying vocalinux for speech to text in my Debian-testing box. Works like a charm. Just type CTRL twice, speak, CTRL twice again, and text is produced.

Works with all applications. Recognizes Spanish and English without apparent problems. Everything running on my laptop, no external model used. Works on CPU.

For me, this is going to be a game changer.

The family of #freeSoftware software suites for EU public administrations is growing:

* OpenDesk (DE): https://www.opendesk.eu
* LaSuite (FR): https://github.com/suitenumerique
* Mijn Bureau (NL): https://minbzk.github.io/mijn-bureau/

This reminds me of the situation in Spain 20 years ago: the blossoming of Linux-based distros (Linex, MAX, Guadalinex, Lliurex, and many others) promoted by regional public administrations, that we're discussing in the #LaEraDeLasDistros podcast (in Spanish) https://laeradelasdistros.es/

The USA Supreme Court: Federal agencies are no longer independent

Max Schrems: “Even in the European Commission's logic, the basis for any EU-US data transfer deal is dead. We call upon the Commission to start an orderly exit from the US cloud – which is not easy, but unfortunately unavoidable. The Commission built a legal house of cards under industry pressure. Now that it clearly collapses, it has to take responsibility.”

I got carried away and asked OpenCode to “translate” MSDOS-1.0 (originally written in 8086 Assembly) not only into C, but also into Rust and Ada. I found the comparison between the versions in the three languages—and between any of them and the original Assembly code—to be intriguing and interesting.

#OpenClaw story: an outlier, an example of everything that can be wrong in software development, the way #freeSoftware will be written in the years to come, or what?

Whatever you think about it, the story is interesting, and I'm pretty sure you can find several takeaways

OpenClaw: One Developer, 43 Failed Projects, and a Lobster Changed the AI Industry in 10 Weeks | Robo Rhythms

Peter Steinberger sold PSPDFKit for €100M, burned out, vibe-coded 43 failed projects, then accidentally built OpenClaw, the fastest-growing open-source AI agent in GitHub history. Crypto scammers hijacked his accounts, Cisco called it a security nightmare, and Sam Altman hired him on Valentine's Day. Here's the full story.
