I hate money. Like, I like having enough money to live. I just hate the whole system. I want to do my thing, go to somewhere where there is food to eat lunch, maybe sometimes help out with making the food so other people can eat lunch, and go back to doing my thing. Other people can use the things I make, too. I'm not gatekeeping. Why can't we live like this? Money is just too damn stressful.

Hair coloring is gender affirming care and it should be covered by insurance.

And I really do mean that. When I walk in, sometimes I have an inspo photo or a couple ideas and a general vibe. From there it’s a collaborative effort and I’m trusting the color artist to do something amazing. And she never fails to deliver. 😁

So you're telling me the problem is all the meetings... Seriously. AI didn't solve anything. It just provided a branding term for a guy making an app. And maybe it made it a bit easier for one guy to make something a little more flashy. That's it. The real thing that changed was that people shut up and left the guy alone.

I’m hungry. All I’ve had is a small breakfast sandwich, a slice of lemon bread, a bowl of cup noodles, and a protein shake. Not disastrous on the nutrition front but not exactly good, either.

Ironic that Disney’s live action The Three Musketeers doesn’t have a French dub. It’s got like 12 other languages, just not French. Or maybe it’s that’s the whole movie is so incredibly offensive to the French that they couldn’t find anyone to do a French translation. 😅

@ics@tau-ceti.space It really isn't. But it's somehow breaking social barriers because it's "cool". At my wife's work, they assigned a whole team to do an AI-assisted 6-month bug scrub. They've been going through the back-log, looking for bugs they think an agent can fix, having a QA person generate and test a fix and then kicking it to the engineers. One of the bugs "fixed" was something my wife wanted to fix a year ago but didn't because she couldn't get a PM to sign off on her spending the time. But because it's an "AI bug blitz", suddenly it's worth the time. And of course none of this is cheaper in terms of engineering time because engineers still have to review the code and run the whole internal process to get stuff merged, which is often the time consuming part. But shit's getting done just because it's a good excuse to play with AI. 🤦🏻‍♀️

@redshift@techhub.social They’re different. And they have different strengths. A picture is worth a thousand words and a movie is 24 pictures a second for 2 hours. 😝 But more seriously, movies have a sort of texture to them that just words don’t. When it’s done well and with care, there can be so much more detail packed in there that you may not even consciously notice but it provides texture to the story. When an author tries to provide that much detail, they go on and on and annoy the shit out of you because it’s all description and no story. But the experience of using your imagination can be good, too. Your brain can fill in the details from a few hints and the exercise gives you more ownership of the experience. With a movie, they show you. With a book, you have both the obligation and the opportunity to fill in those details. They’re totally different experiences.

@redshift@techhub.social I’m not familiar with Stalker but the movie that comes to mind immediately thinking about this is Blade Runner. Yes, it’s roughly based on a book and maybe it’s even a very good book. But the experience of that movie is unlike anything else. You could write exactly that story down in a book but it would end up being a fairly flat detective story that gets filed in among the thousands of other books in the mystery section of your local library. It would be a little weird but nothing that special. But the movie… The movie is a whole experience. Everything from the Film Noir style to the phenomenal costume and set work. The movie takes you into a whole other world and then tells a story in that world. And in the context of that world, the story is rich and meaningful and it hits you right in the heart. Because it’s no longer just a story about a detective. It’s a story about people and a place and a life none of us can really 100% relate to because we don’t live in that world. And because of that, it captivates us and engages our curiosity as much as our empathy. And to me this is really important because stories aren’t just stories. In order to have meaning, stories need context. And you can either go into excruciating detail and bore your readers to death trying to give them the context (I’m looking at you, Brandon Sanderson) or you can try to play off a context that already exists (“It was a cold October afternoon in Paris in 1465…”) or you can just tell a story and let your readers fill in the detail because none of that matters to you anyway. But with a movie, you can actually set the stage and tell even simple stories with incredible depth and detail.

When people talk about societies without money, they often talk about bartering, directly trading with each other for goods and services. I’ll do XYZ up help you and you give me ABC in return. But what if I’m the best one to help but you don’t have anything I want? Do I just help for free because I’m a nice person? Do I just help for an IOU? Or tell you to pay it forward by helping out someone else with your means? Or are you somehow expected to get something I need by trading with someone like a deranged video game quest? The system kind of breaks down if every exchange has to be a direct exchange between two people. Money solves this by giving us something that represents pure value. You can give me money in exchange for doing XYZ and then I can go to Bob and give him that money in exchange for the thing that I actually need. It’s actually a really useful concept, which is why humans keep inventing it. Even if you take all the money away, people tend to come up with something that they can use for money. The classic example is prisons and cigarettes. But it also tends to always go sideways and some people end up with more money than anyone else and that gives them power and they use that power to get more money and power. 😩
