this is more of Admiral Adama than I became accustomed to seeing on Battlestar Galactica…

@misty@digipres.club what really blows my mind is, they've already ·had· that wakeup call via e.g. Microsoft Office 365 Online; and yet… 🤷

@ricci@discuss.systems are we thinking it's an effect added in post; or are they actually filming the reflection of spotlights shining directly into the actors' eyes from 3 feet away?

@cherizilla@retro.pizza I was wondering about that too, so I looked up infrared on wikipeida (and double-checked "micron")
micron is a micrometer (10^-6), and that's within the wavelength-range of IR. So I ·think· somebody lookd somethign up inthe encyclopedia, way back in '80.

@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net I've been suspicious for most of the film that the kaiju footage was indeed recycled from some other movie…🤔

ok quick poll: if Giant Spiders were actually real, would they qualify as "charismatic megafauna" (I think the answer is an obvious "yes"; but OTOH, spiders do freak some folks right the fuck out…)

@haverholm@radikal.social @davidgerard@circumstances.run speaking of LLMs (but going in the opposite direction), I often find myself trying to predict the content of the original post that led to the response I've just seen first; I begrudgingly concede that the statistical accuracy of the LLMs predicting subsequent text is much higher than my accuracy at predicting what started a thread 😝

@lauren@mastodon.laurenweinstein.org so, I'm not saying this is a good thing, just a potentially interesting one (better you than I 😜), but: hundreds to thousands of years from now, assuming we haven't bombed ourselves back to the stone age, I imagine future anthropologists/historians will find the continuity and abundance of your posts to be quite valuable.
Of course, if current trends continue (though I'm still optimistic they won't), said posts will just be used to build an LLM of you 😛

is it "foreshadowing" or "irony" when the character is emphatically shown not believing in what the story has shown to be true?

yes, young lady, your father just died horribly; and you're feeling guilty; "but remember you have homework!" 😁

@robinhouston@mathstodon.xyz @christianp@mathstodon.xyz I'm gonna respond explicitly here in case anybody wants to refer back to this in the future:
The point is not simply to dispose of them: the point is to reduce them to their constituent particles through nuclear incineration; the only reason to care about the transport energy costs is if one finds oneself in the unfortunate position of having only enough budget for the cheaper of the two options 😜.
