Very Human Robot

@rayckeith Large parts of Africa leapfrogged wired telephone straight to wireless. It's more a question of available technology jumping ahead faster than previous investments capital depreciation times.

@SecureOwl@infosec.exchange The faster action would be to just unplug the routers. A couple of 800G optical links is all the isolation really needed...

@cstross@wandering.shop The plan is to softly settle in shabby chic comfort, like the European nobility.

@Sheril Is that North Dakota at under a dollar? Nice :-) The other subtle gain by charging at home is that I never need to go out of my way to fuel up or wait for a gas pump. It charges while I sleep, and I essentially never go longer than one charge in a day. (Although presumably I could; DC chargers are plenty around here.) Now we need to give renters the same awesome charging experience!

@cstross @graydon @david_chisnall @linuxgnome @ChrisMayLA6 An AI crash will absolutely happen, just like the Internet crash happened in 2001! Right now, the game is to position yourself as the Google or Amazon of AI, not the Excite or Pets.com

@raphaelmorgan @briankrebs How about devices that are totally just computers in boxes but might have Linux loaded on them by the consumer? (I mean. Most consumers won't.)

@tojiro Reviewing other people's code and debugging unfamiliar modules is where we grow the most though. My advice to new programmers is always "read other people's code! Do it regularly, with the goal to understand how it actually works. Step through it in the debugger!"

@stevefenton@mastodon.social @paco@infosec.exchange "free as in puppy"

@evacide@hachyderm.io so the system is working? Good!

@TomF@mastodon.gamedev.place "disenflounce"

@faithisleaping@anarres.family that's literally in the job description of an office manager, though. It's one of their required traits!

@wdormann@infosec.exchange I'm just using API pricing up front to make sure the economics still work out. The $20/month plans will go away and the $200/month plans will be scaled back, probably.

@cstross The nuclear winter caused by the global warming food system collapse wars will clean up the global warming!

@kurtmrufa @graydon @cstross @david_chisnall @linuxgnome @ChrisMayLA6 yeah that's a fairly mainstream opinion actually :-) Thinner fets and more gates and 3D geometries won't do what shrinks have done.

@cstross @mdm @graydon @david_chisnall @linuxgnome @ChrisMayLA6 TBH that sounds metal A F !

@castano@mastodon.gamedev.place I've had luck getting in touch with Apple Dev support people on the Apple developer forums. Make sure you name drop whatever large library project may be blocked by this....

@rygorous and in another 35 years we'll all have an NVL72 in our pockets!

@deech I want the contact information of that secret recruiting firm!

@rygorous @aeva More than 300 people are struck by lightning in the US every year? That's actually pretty high TBF

@TheEvilSkeleton@social.treehouse.systems "Usage of vim is obviously problematic in open source software, so we've added an explicit emacs only policy to our project." It's the quality of the code that the person submits that matters. If some people use LLMs to submit worse code, that's a people problem.

@rygorous look if it's not anisotropic then is it even filtering?

@lurker@awful.systems Many security companies are not the best at software engineering. (I don't know about the ones used here in particular.) I honestly do not believe this was orchestrated. I've seen similar security consultant mistakes for humans in the past.

@rygorous whoa! That's bonkers

@cstross "fully automated luxury gay space communism" has its problems though as chronicled in "Consider Phlebas" (I'd still opt in, no doubt!)

@0xabad1dea No, that was at the protocol level. To be fair, that proposal calls out all the things that ipv6 fails to address, and calls out that ipv6 transition isn't even happening, and there are simpler ways to solve all of these problems. The drawback in that particular proposal is the centralization, and the default routing rules seemingly disallowing local peer discovery.

@gallowaylass The US prices are much lower if you actually have insurance, and there's a law that you pay more tax if you don't have insurance, and there are subsidies for the insurance for poor people (this is "Obamacare") That being said, keeping a single payer system is obviously the best health policy! Most of the US wishes it was politically possible to get there.

@SecureOwl@infosec.exchange fair!

@Daojoan@mastodon.social Internet streaming video disrupted cable TV monopolies. Who did they externalize costs to, that cable TV didn't impose?

@jschauma@mstdn.social how can infinite growth forever if not growth hack number go up?

@cstross@wandering.shop hopefully the hiatus will engender fresh creativity!

@ketan@climatejustice.social I saw an interesting diagram, that energy percentage is measured in origin energy. I e, "oil energy used" is measured in kW of heat from the oil extracted, even if it's used to make electricity at 36% efficiency. So renewables at 98% efficiency are worth almost 3x the oil in these charts -- the replacement is much further along than you might conclude from a pie chart!

@TheJen@beige.party well just start saying "teenager on computer"

@rygorous @TomF not enough VRAM. GB300 has 288GB! (And we were comparing to the price of a Ferrari so...) Minor drawback: you have to copy your data out into something with an actual display port to actually see it.

@cstross@wandering.shop Praisebones Rathergood turns into Praisegood? Is this an intentional contraction?

@TomF @rygorous have you checked the cost of a GB300 rack lately?

@rygorous @TomF I have minions to do those things for me. But yes. Wafers and watts... And all they do is multiplying tensors and rectifying. Soo much multiply-add!

@fabio yeah there's a difference between "we need to fix X" and "we should tear it all down because I feel I'd be able to fill a power vacuum!"

@cstross@wandering.shop Given up on the DMM subplot from yesteryear?

@0xabad1dea Nine fives

@kurtmrufa @graydon @cstross @david_chisnall @linuxgnome @ChrisMayLA6 Vertical stacking and the ability to wick away heat are where it's at now! And maybe quantum will start a new scale curve?

@skylark13 @tojiro In the best of worlds, we get to pick which parts we do! A hobby woodcarver might use a knife where an industrial process would use CNC, and that's OK! Note that society doesn't pay me to "do the bits I enjoy" though. They pay me for robust, working software, as quickly as possible, and the models can help achieve that, when guided.

@paco@infosec.exchange nerf makes bows, no?

@kp @0xabad1dea Yeah the right time for backwards compatibility was 25 years ago...

@cstross you know, that would make a lot of sense!

@QasimRashid Believing that touching must be sensual is so corrosive to the human condition. We should be able to give someone who did something good a hug, no matter their gender. (Just don't cling) I swear, the American sex fixation is as damaging to human world culture as the suppression of women in the middle east.

@gloriouscow now play the song on the internal one bit speaker! :-)

@chaucerburnt yes! This!

@andrewt 2005 wasn't as modern as you think it was. It was years before the iPhone. Google had only just shipped an email service. And git improved on Subversion (*) so it's not like the precedent was all that great... (*) And TBF, bitkeeper
