The land beneath most solar farms is mostly left as gravel or turf. But the teams at two sites in Minnesota decided to do things differently, seeding the ground with native grasses and flowering plants. Five years later, that land is home to many types of insect, with a 20-fold increase in bees that have begun pollinating the crops in neighboring fields. Here's more from The Pulse. https://flip.it/ta7SMV #Environment #Solar #Ecology

A decade ago, Spain was one of Europe's more expensive power markets, and critics said it was investing too much in solar energy. Now, the average wholesale price for electricity in the country is one of the lowest in Europe. Oxford professor and energy policy advisor Jan Rosenow writes for his newsletter about how that happened. https://flip.it/bIwOpR #Renewables #Environment #Spain

Potentially good news for arthritis sufferers. A study on mice found that the loss of cartilage points to a protein called 15-PGDH. The protein becomes more abundant as people age and disrupts healing. But old mice experienced knee cartilage growth with the introduction of a 15-PGDH inhibitor. This might give you nightmares the night before you go for a dip in the ocean: giant octopuses the size of whales. A new analysis of fossils shows that these intelligence creatures once grew to a length of 62 feet and used their strong jaws to crush the skeletons of their prey. Fortunately for today’s ocean swimmers, this was millions of years ago. @ScienceAlert@flipboard.com has more: https://flip.it/vvYX5O #Science #Animals #Ocean #SeaCreatures

Giant, Kraken-Like Octopuses Once Stalked Their Prey in Cretaceous Seas

Long before Megalodon ruled the seas, something just as unsettling may have lurked in the depths – giant octopuses the size of whales.

Spring bloom arrived early across much of the United States this year, bringing pretty flowers and trees into view while also handing allergy sufferers an early dose of sneezing, itchy eyes and worse. Another side effect of our changing climate. Read more from @InsideClimateNews@flipboard.com: https://flip.it/0dHE9u #Science #ClimateChange #Health #Allergies

When a species goes extinct, not only does the animal vanish, but its relationships to surviving species often becomes complicated, too. So, imagine between 50,000 and 10,000 years ago, when many of the world’s largest creatures — elephant-sized sloths, three-ton wombats, massive saber-toothed cats — were wiped out. Phys.org tells us how those extinctions are still being felt today:

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) moves warm, salty water northward from the tropics, where it sinks and shifts cold water south, benefiting marine life and regulating the climate. However, this huge system of currents may be on the verge of collapse. Could building a giant dam between Russia and Alaska save it? Read more from @LiveScience@flipboard.com:

Building a massive dam between Alaska and Russia could prevent AMOC collapse, scientists say

Building a dam in the Bering Strait might preserve the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, but experts warn it could also threaten wildlife, Indigenous people and shipping — and could actually speed up its demise.

Running has become increasingly popular in recent years. But rising temperatures and air pollution are making it harder to put in that extra mile — or get out there at all. @TheConversationClimate@newsie.social has more, including how “the relationship between running, climate change and consumption is wickedly ironic.”

Hurdles to a hobby: How climate change and ‘runfluencer’ culture impact our daily jog

Climate change is already re-shaping how people engage in sport. Due to warming temperatures, running may become less accessible and safe for many of us.

This might sound crazy but imagine if the name you gave your newborn affected the shape of your offspring’s face over time. After all, George Orwell once famously said “At 50, everyone has the face he deserves.” Research supports Orwell’s observation. But do names play a role? Read more from @sciencefocus@flipboard.com:
