One of our first experiments with curation and discovery in #Bonfire involves building public-facing actor collections, and then building custom feeds out of those. In Bonfire, the data sources for custom feeds are Circles, which is a combination of a Collection plus Access Control List. Introducing Fedizen, Our Bonfire Project We Distribute is teaming up with Bonfire to develop a new kind of social instance - one that elevates curation and discovery to promote all things Fediverse. It’s a social instance, but also a discovery portal. Fedizen is a collaborative effort between ourselves and the Bonfire team to build a new kind of Fediverse instance, one built specifically for the network and the communities growing around it. It combines ActivityPub federation with curated aggregation to create a network-wide community portal In a nutshell, Fedizen is almost like a grassroots approach to building Yahoo, but designed specifically to serve the space. It’s an effort to collect all of the news coverage, community opinions, development blogs, events, and media, and put it into one place that’s easy to find, easy to filter, and adjusts based on what you’re most interested in within this space.

Oooh, neat -- @Bonfire has officially released its #Communities module: https://bonfirenetworks.org/posts/bonfire-for-communities/ I backed the project, and I'm overjoyed to see it coming to fruition. The world *desperately* needs a good open-source, open-network, open-community alternative to enshittified monstrosities like Facebook, and #Bonfire is the first one I've seen that appears to check pretty much all the boxes of "how to do it right". It's impressively complete. (Might force me to get off my ass and stand up my own server, so I can start hosting some of the communities I'm involved with.) And yes, yes, Discord -- I use it a lot, but it's still corporate, still likely to enshittify, and really only covers a fraction of the Community use cases. This looks better. So check it out -- I think it's an important project, that a lot of groups could probably benefit from...

can anyone comment on how good, or not good, search (for posts) is between self-hosted fedi platform apps good for single-user servers, such as #Snac2, #Mitra, #GoToSocial, #Bonfire, etc? I am looking for search which is actually usable by someone who wishes to find things and perhaps sort what's found, unlike that provided by e.g. Mastodon, Akkoma, etc.

We just released Bonfire Social 1.0.3 🔥 Blog post with all the details: bonfirenetworks.org/posts/bo... It comes with dozens of bug fixes and UX improvements, plus: Federated comments embeddable on any web page. Deep Ghost integration: SSO, membership tier sync, and automatic article import. New dashboard widgets: spotlight, polls closing soon, top discussions. #CalmEmpowerment: a new design pattern that starts with a few sensible defaults, offers a middle layer of common adjustments, and reveals the full options only when you need them. Boundaries and post permissions got this treatment first, more to follow... Modular community rules: a first step in bringing research and co-design with students and researchers at @hci@micro.blogs.princeton.edu into Bonfire, so governance becomes something communities can better define and share, and that others can fork and adapt. #Bonfire #Fediverse #ActivityPub #Ghost #CommunityRules
