The idea that Office 365 is compliant for use in any regulated space is *absolutely laughable*, but apparently the reason GCC High is approved for government use is because the government let agencies use it while they were evaluating it, and then realized so many agencies were now dependent on it, that they had to approve it even though it wasn't able to actually meet the security criteria.

Federal cyber experts called Microsoft's cloud a "pile of shit," approved it anyway

@Elizafox@social.treehouse.systems I particularly love the ChatGPT pricing page: https://chatgpt.com/pricing/ You are buying "limited access" or "more access" or "expanded access" because nobody is confident in anything enough to give you an actual number for what you are paying for. It's just "give us some money and we'll treat you at a certain level of customer, and we'll decide day to day what that level of customer deserves based on market conditions and astrology".

Paid plans (Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise) are priced per user per month. We offer monthly plans for Plus, Pro, and Business and annual plans for Business and Enterprise.

@thunfisch The US has always been super clear that data sovereignty claims by US tech companies doesn't absolve them the obligation to respond to data requests from the US. But yeah, the comedy that they both created this sovereign EU cloud and then immediately turned around and went "but okay sometimes it's just gonna pipe stuff to the US anyways because AI" is *chef's kiss*.

@MichaelTBacon @alienghic @cwebber Yeah I think there's some use in some cases that work okay, but only make sense at the current financially unsustainable offers. As soon as the prices go up/everyone has to pay the piper, the cases where LLMs are useful won't be financially justifiable.

@Elizafox@social.treehouse.systems At work we spoke to a company about pricing for an AI thing, and I'm very confident that they just picked a large number and put it in a quote without any actual tie to expected usage or anything.

@Elizafox@social.treehouse.systems My understanding is that zero companies (except for NVIDIA) are actually profitable when it comes to AI, so everyone is just picking numbers out of their hat to try to make some of their money back, and figuring people will sort themselves into the maximum tier they can afford.

@cas One thing that really excites me for hijacking prevention is @OpenSourceCollective. The OSC can steward ownership of your project's domain name or trademarks, and no single individual can run off with it. OSC also will only permit transfer to other nonprofits. So it can be a real commitment to the commons and solid proof you can't go commercial.

@libreoffice@fosstodon.org LibreOffice should delete every one of these rampages about ODF vs OOXML, and loudly proclaim LibreOffice is the best solution for working with both of them. Because it is, but your blogs aren't selling that. If you want ODF to be the dominant format, you need to get people using LibreOffice *first*, which comes from marketing compatibility, and then people will naturally defer to saving in the default/best supported format for their software.

@libreoffice@fosstodon.org I sent Italo an email about this, but this series of blog posts is really sabotaging LibreOffice. If you want the world to be able to escape Microsoft Office, you need to stop claiming LibreOffice is incompatible with it! LibreOffice is a great drop-in compatible replacement and *that* is what you should be marketing. Telling people you can't work with Office is just announce LibreOffice can't do the job people need it to.

@selfhostingsh@mastodon.social It's important to define a difference between homelabbing and selfhosting. I selfhost, I have a couple of cheap off-brand NUCs doing single-function duties, and one decent machine running Sandstorm as my app server. This infrastructure makes sense for what I need. Homelabbers generally are trying to replicate/play with a similar environment to their work for testing and experimenting. It rarely is the right design choice for home, but it can be educational for work.

@qbe@chaos.social @JohnDal@mastodon.green @erkhyan@yiff.life A lot of things in Linux feel downright primitive compared to the options I have on a Windows system. There's totally reasonable reasons for that, mind you. A finely-tuned Windows 10 install can be *a thing of elegance*, and it can run on a potato from a decade ago. But you had to have an enterprise license agreement to get rid of half the junk. I hope 11 gets back there, but there is some real jank with rough perf costs.
