Trump Tourism Effects

In the past day or two on social media I kept seeing this graph from a Semafor story on the declining volume of international visitors to the United States. Semafor Graph. It seems to show, and was being remarked on as showing, that the second Trump administration has been responsible for a drop in visitors from abroad from some countries on a scale comparable to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. My first thought was “that can’t be true”. And indeed it is not true. I mean, the pandemic shut

Steven Lukes, The Diversity of Morals

In August I was a discussant on a panel about Steven Lukes’s recent book, The Diversity of Morals. Here’s an extended version of what I said. A PDF version is available as well. The Diversity of Morals asks the questions philosophers ask about morality: what is “the moral”? How wide and deep is its diversity? Is there a standpoint from which we can make our judgments? It then refuses to answer them by philosophical methods alone. Instead, it draws on the resources of both social theory and the s

On Golden Gate, you can chat to the built-in foundation model directly with fm chat. You can also do things like pipeline it into scripts. E.g., in the second screenshot here it's reading and summarizing a @sixcolors@zeppelin.flights article. The model's context window is quite small, so I had to write a script that chunked the text, so it's sort of serially summarized. Still, it’s nice to have fully-local access to this model in this way.

Targeted flattery-spam/phishing aimed at harmless academics like me is leveling up! Book Club rubbish is so last month. Thanks, LLMs! I just got a highly elaborate six-paragraph one “from” Emily St John Mandel (of Station Eleven fame). The choice of author to impersonate is really quite clever. Like the book club spam, it’s trawling for somewhat vain people who are susceptible to flattery, which of course excludes academic authors [puts hand to ear] sorry I’m just getting an update

I just watched Gremlins 2 for the first time since 1990. The entire film is built around a dim, vain, tasteless New York developer named Daniel Clamp, his sprawling Clamp Building and his gimcrack Clamp Empire, which includes TV stations, his inane self-aggrandizing books, and a line of jams and jellies. At the end he falls for a character named Marla. This has been a remark about how the meaning of a work of art is not something fixed or under the control of its creators.

Yesterday’s fun activity was writing a package to make cartograms like this. I am also open to lavish VC funding to develop an excessively complex German-style board game based on this layout, modeled on e.g. “Escape from New York”, “Warriors”, or perhaps “My Dinner with Andre”.

While I don’t think this essay quite finds a solution, the problem it identifies is real. “What bit of the division of labor will *you* symbolically reject to create your special identity?” is the personal version of social theories that fantasize about rejecting the division of labor while somehow keeping all of its benefits. https://aeon.co/essays/the-radical-reasons-why-you-dream-of-making-things-by-hand

I’ve spent the last couple of months revising my Data Visualization book for a second edition that, ideally, will appear some time in the next twelve months. As with the first edition, I’ve posted a complete draft of the book at its website. The production process hasn’t started yet, so it’s not ready to pre-order or anything, but the site has a one-question form you can fill out that asks for your email address if you’d like to be notified with one (and only one) email when it’s available. The Baby Boom Again

Prompted by a local data visualization event, I revisited my old “Visualizing the Baby Boom” poster and added a few things to it. The additions are there to add a little extra context and to bring out some relevant comparisons. There are new rows showing snapshots of the country’s population pyramid every ten years between 1935 and 2015, to show the boomer cohort moving up through the population’s age distribution. Following on from some discussion on the socials with Gina C. Pierters and Carl S

The five boroughs of New York City can be informally or formally carved up into many different pieces, depending on what it is that you’re doing. As part of an ongoing project, I recently made an R package, nycmaps, that lets you draw maps of some of these geographies. Things being what they are, these spatial units don’t necessarily overlap in compatible ways. City, State, and Congressional Districts, School Districts, Police Precincts, Fire Companies, Election Precincts, Municipal Court Distri

Hourly Subway Station Flows

Pie charts are bad, as any fule kno. We’re not as good at judging relative differences between angles and areas as we are at judging relative differences in lengths on a common baseline. This is especially true when we have more than two things to compare at the same time. So, as a rule, you shouldn’t use them. You should figure out some other way of viewing your data instead. On the other hand, I just made 424 animated pie charts because if you’re going to break a rule you should break it good

I thought I had found a clever way around an annoying problem—I have to get hundreds of randomly-named SVG elements that correspond to ordered elements (train stations) in a CSV. So I concocted a script in Illustrator to extract, all at once, the layer names of a bunch of elements after I have cmd-clicked them so they're all selected. I am so clever. But ... Illustrator cannot extract them in the order I clicked them, only in layer order, which is itself random. Gaaah.
