I'm a policy nerd and velocipedestrian, sometimes trying to grow veggies and on a quest to become more tolerant and empathetic.

I like tea, libraries, jigsaw puzzles, fridge magnets, cooking, mountains, trains, rescue dogs and tropical islands.

When I grow up I want to be a train driver. Or a librarian. Or maybe a character in a William Gibson novel.

I only boost pics with Alt Text. Most of my posts vanish after three months.

Nice lady at the Woolies check out asked me if I was collecting whatever it is they're giving away this month. I said, "is that plastic crap that will just end up in the ocean and kill fish?". She said "yes it is. I will pass your feedback on to management."

It may not have made much difference this time, but Labor needs to understand that they were never going to succeed against a populist, anti-elite insurgency with a former staffer and corporate lobbyist as a candidate.

Reminder that the Pharmacy Guild are the worst rent-seekers in the country. "...the guild also fought a furious but ultimately unsuccessful public campaign against the introduction of 60-day prescribing in 2023, an initiative that meant patients with certain chronic diseases enjoyed a dramatic reduction in the cost of their medications and needed fewer visits to their doctor and pharmacist. While the guild claimed at the time the move would lead to the closure of between 200 and 600 community pharmacies due to financial pressures, the health minister’s office tells The Saturday Paper that 54 new pharmacies have opened nationwide since the change." #AusPol https://www.thesaturdaypaper.com.au/news/health/2026/07/18/how-pharmacy-guild-got-so-powerful

How the Pharmacy Guild got so powerful

The peak body for pharmacy owners outspends the Minerals Council of Australia on political donations. It has amassed significant power over the industry, and policy, with little transparency for practitioners or customers.

"We heard similar arguments before tobacco advertising was banned. We heard them before seatbelt laws, random breath testing and plain packaging. Powerful industries almost always argue that reform will go too far. History usually judges otherwise." #AusPolhttps://thepoint.com.au/opinions/260703-from-guns-to-gambling-fierce-industry-backlash-is-often-a-sign-reform-is-necessary
The Point

From guns to gambling, fierce industry backlash is often a sign reform is necessary

When John Howard introduced Australia's gun reforms after the Port Arthur massacre, he knew they would be controversial. He also knew they were necessary. Parliament now has another opportunity to show that kind of leadership. Nearly four in five Australians support a total ban on gambling advertising. Only one in three think the laws before Parliament go far enough.

Does anyone know of any Australian advocacy groups that focus on noise pollution, maybe something similar to the UK's Noise Abatement Society? I know groups like the Public Health Association do work in this area but I wonder if there's a dedicated group somewhere? Any tips or boosts welcome! #AusPol #NoisePollution

Someone needs to come up with whatever the Albo version of TACO is as shorthand for his visceral fear of implementing any meaningful, progressive reform and his apparently irresistible need to squander the largest parliamentary majority in recent Australian history.

"A bolder play would be to call out Trump as the key source of global economic instability and declare that the Albanese government is committed to protecting Australia against that instability, in the same way that Mark Carney has made a virtue of protecting Canada’s interests against Trump. If Albanese was lucky, an enraged Trump might hit back and shut down AUKUS, thereby rescuing taxpayers from the truly profound stupidity of our defence and security establishment, and rusted-on Americanophiles like Richard Marles. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves: the government is drifting and appears clueless as to why it is actually in power. The soaring cost of government debt is less a crisis and more an opportunity to be seized with both hands." #AusPol https://www.crikey.com.au/2026/09/15/anthony-albanese-donald-trump-us-bonds-debt/

Albanese badly needs a reset. The bond markets offer him a huge opportunity

If the government was smart, the soaring cost of government debt would be used to show voters that Labor can sensibly manage the economy, while One Nation and the Coalition chase populist stupidity.

Cory Doctorow:

But that's not the world capitalists want. For capitalists, the point is to restrict other people's choices in order to maximize your own freedom. That's how we get economic doctrines like "revealed preferences": the idea that if a person says they want one thing, but does another thing, then you can tell what they *really* prefer by looking at the latter and disregarding the former.

This is the kind of doctrine you can only fully embrace after sustaining the kind of highly specific neurological injury that is induced by taking an economics degree, an injury that makes you incapable of perceiving or reasoning about power. Under the doctrine of revealed preferences, someone who sells their kidney to make the rent has a revealed preference for only having one kidney:

@lazarus7@infosec.exchange I reckon there are at least a dozen providers I can choose from. Some are different brands of the same group and some are resellers but there's a bit of real price competition, mainly packaged as 6 monthly intro deals, which I take full advantage of. They're all using the same network (at least at my end of it), so switching is seamless, just need to time it right to avoid being double-billed for a month.
