Great article about when and whether to use Layout Builder in #Drupal: https://talish.dev/blog/layout-builder-decision-framework
talish.dev

Layout Builder Is Over-Applied: A Decision Framework for When It Actually Fits

The Pattern I Keep SeeingA team starts a Drupal project. Someone asks how editors will build and arrange page content. Someone else says "Layout Builder," and that is the end of the conversation. Nobody asks what the editors actually need. Nobody asks what the content model demands. Layout Builder gets switched on because it is powerful, modern, and comes with core.

Some helpful tips on adapting to Gitlab-based #Drupal issue queues from @ultimike@drupal.community on @drupaleasy@drupal.community - https://www.drupaleasy.com/quicktips/getting-comfortable-gitlab-and-drupal-issue-queue (and +1 to stating that the article is #AIFree!)

You can make HTTP requests in #Drupal Kernel tests! Your tests run faster and are easier to debug! I've updated the documentation page on it https://www.drupal.org/docs/develop/automated-testing/phpunit-in-drupal/making-http-requests-programmatically-in-kernel-tests and you can also read my block post for an overview: https://www.noreiko.com/blog/speed-your-phpunit-browser-tests-one-trick #PHPUnit #ttd

Making HTTP requests programmatically in Kernel tests

HTTP requests using drupalGet() While in general, Functional tests are designed for the testing of page loads, it's possible to test these in Kernel tests too. The advantage is that Kernel tests are much faster to run, because they only set up what they need to. The faster running time is particularly useful if many different combinations need to be tested for. The trade-off is that some aspects of the Drupal site are not available, such as form submissions and session handling, and that more se

@ghostwriter@phpc.social The thing that bugs me with Laravel (so far) is the batshit meaningless names they have for the components. Manage your database with Sailboat! Create CLI tools with Artichoke!

@ghostwriter@phpc.social It's annoying, but also, it's crappy DX and it's a mental load having to learn all these random names.

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange I've been pondering for a while that maybe #mastodon COULD have an algorithm. Or multiple, pluggable ones. All open, transparent, configurable.

Can anyone identify this insect? Southern UK. Head missing! Underside is shiny and black, with little white markings.

Top developer tip: avoid smarmy tone like this: "Searching for Solr? You must type the correct path. Solr will respond." Yeah thanks for that, fucking useless.

Are there any logos available for marking that an #OpenSource project is AI-free? I found https://notbyai.fyi/ but it looks a bit scammy. #FuckAI

@module_builder@drupal.community This was a feature I'd been meaning to add for ages. And then I needed to add a test module for a core issue (https://www.drupal.org/project/drupal/issues/3502583) and it was an opportunity to do some #CondimentPassing, rather than something boring like write the module to modules/custom and then move it by hand. Who wants to do that?

Add the ability to deprecate a plugin namespace

Problem/Motivation Spin-off from [#3490484]. ImageToolkitOperation plugins are discovered in Plugin/ImageToolkit/Operation ImageToolkit plugins are discovered in Plugin/ImageToolkit Because plugin discovery is recursive, this means that every time we look for ImageToolkit plugins, we load all the ImageToolkitOperation plugins (e.g. from the gd toolkit), check if they're ImageToolkits, find that they're not, and chuck the results away. Then when we look for ImageToolkitOperation plugins

@grimalkina@mastodon.social I think both views are right in a way. We need to rebuild the mental model when faced with foreign code. That's why code documentation is so important. And rebuilding it with iterative experimentation is *possible*, but IMO it's very very wrong: code is not science or archaeology, and it should not have to be approached like that. Documentation matters!
