Last weekend, roughly 200 media, IT, and policy people met at #FediDay Berlin to discuss the status quo & future of the #Fediverse & decentralized #SocialMedia. Our @lxplm@mastodon.social also attended – albeit on behalf of #SWR X Lab (welcome to the #ARD federation). Together with @Silbendrechsler@hessen.social (who runs the @3sat@zdf.social account), he discussed ongoing Fedi projects in the world of German public broadcasting. The session (& many others) will be available via @peertube@framapiaf.org soon. For updates, follow @berlinfediday@berlin.social.

This is a big one. “(...) standalone generative AI systems, based on unlawful web scraping, are in conflict with international human rights law (...) and standards through their design, development and deployment. First Fedi post after a long weekend. And it seems that we've hit 7777 followers – and entered the Top 1000 of Mastodon accounts. 😮

We know, it's not about the sheer numbers. It's about the community and the impact. But still... 🤗

Many thanks for your interest in our projects and prototypes, our comments and curated links. Cheers! 🥂

#Laptops are pretty old school, but still indispensable when you're working in digital media and journalism. Unfortunately, devices have become incredibly expensive. Even the smallest researchers and project managers need a break. 🐣🐣🐣

This account is hitting pause until April 13th. Some team members are off, some are operating at chicklet capacity.

Also: Have you seen the internet lately? There's plenty of content out there. You'll manage. We're a media tech R&D team, not a content machine. So we're doing what research people do best: stepping back, thinking, and occasionally going down a slide.

Happy Easter. See you on the other side. 🌱

🤖 "I see a future in which trusted avatars continue to deliver information. Sometimes that avatar will be a real person. Sometimes it will be an AI version of a person, a digital twin, a stylized character, or some other embodied intelligence or entity."

In case you missed Cory Corrine's Nieman Lab Prediction for Journalism 2026:

Remember SPOT?

That's the pretty useful geolocation tool we released a while ago (and continue to develop).

It helps you find specific places anywhere in the world – based on a simple, natural language description, OpenStreetMap data, and thoroughly tested AI algorithms.

The @opencage@en.osm.town community reached out to learn more, and Ruben Bouwmeester was happy to answer their questions.

Replying to
@lucajunge@social.tchncs.de Hey. That's all legit criticism. We'll try and keep an eye on the project (the link was originally shared by a trusted member of the DW/ARD R&D community). In the meantime, maybe you want to reach out to the makers of FUNES – and ask about their long term strategy?
