I was very disappointed to discover that these so-called “ROM COM” movies contain no references to either Read Only Memory, or COM ports. 2/10, would not recommend 🤨 #RetroComputing

My #tinyMac hardware build is complete, just in time for #MARCHintosh! It was surprising just how much of a challenge squeezing all the hardware and cabling into the case was in the end. The underlying Linux OS is Bluetooth paired with a spare, modern, Magic Mouse and Keyboard. Now to get some interesting software on it, and try to get it on #globaltalk

This is absolutely brilliant, and sadly brings to mind a few people I know/knew who went to work out in Dubai.

I gave my favourite pic from the Cardiacs gig a little more love and attention: better framing and a little more contrasty. Quite pleased with that now.

I can only take credit for the timing and framing. Concert lighting designers do most of the work for you in shots like this 😀

And here’s the SD card extender and display in place, and a front view with an SD card in the floppy slot. With that little bit of plastic removed from the bottom of the floppy slot the SD card slides in and out freely. You should also be able to see how the display is offset to the left of the image, with a gap to the right. If I were a CAD/3D expert I’d make an armature to fix it to those screw holes along the top and bottom 🤔 #retroComputing #tinymac

Some work on the #TinyMac this afternoon… The IPA did the trick to loosen the hot glue holding the 18650 cell in (although I damaged the inside of the case a little levering it out 🤷‍♂️). And, after some gentle trimming of the guides around the display on the front case, the display is now properly centred. Measure it first with the display centre and only cut out a gap wide enough to hold the display (use a sharp craft knife and side cutters), this helps hold it in place. #retroComputing #mac

I know most of you will have at least one of those words muted, but I needed to get it off my chest. Shouting into the Void 😔

Some pics of the mods I made. Cut sections are highlighted in yellow where possible.

  • First is where I removed the ridge around the inside of the display aperture. This allows the display to be mounted physically offset, but visually centered

  • Second is modification of the floppy receptacle to hold the SD card extender. Just remove the bottom and rear to allow it to fit

  • Third is the floppy slot on the front case. Remove ~1mm. Do it carefully with a fine file

I may have wasted my money on the “G-Drive ev ATC” Thunderbolt enclosure I got for my iMac. It was sold as “HDD not included”, for £25, but I thought I’d be able to just slot a SATA HDD into it.

Turns out the HDD it originally came with was in a sealed, proprietary “cartridge”, with its own USB3 interface, that you slide into the larger rugged Thunderbolt enclosure.

Looking inside, I can see what looks like a standard SATA connector, but it can’t seem to get a bare drive to engage with it 🤔

@cstross@wandering.shop I suspect many of us would love to see the Early Adventures of James Jesus Angleton should you ever want to dip your toes back into the world in the future. And Old George’s 20th century exploits. I know you’ve made it pretty clear you’re done with it, but we can live in hope 😀

Have any of you ever bought from doubledipstore.co.uk?

The prices look way too good to be true, and there’s nothing at all on trustpilot, good or bad 😕
