A beautiful #Equinox to all who celebrate ☀️🌟 The days are getting shorter from now on, the nights longer and colder. I'm looking forward to the cooler season after the heatwaves in Europe but we shouldn't forget to demand climate action just because that part of the year is over for now. Be in nature if you can, enjoy cosy mugs of hot beverages of your choice, and the most fruitful months of produce of the year if you are in the Northern hemisphere 🍇 🍎 🥔 🫜 🧅 🍄‍🟫 🍅 🎃 ☕️

I wrote to our EU representatives outlining why I am angry that chat control is getting yet another attempt to make it into legislation when it has already been rejected several times. Age verification is on the menu too 🤮 If you live in the EU, write to your MEP before 29 June and tell them why Chat Control (mass scanning of personal messages) is unsuited to protect anyone online, let alone minors: https://fightchatcontrol.eu/ #EUpol #ChatControl #DataPrivacy #AgeVerification

For #TerryPratchettDay I want to share one of my favourite quotes. There are many, but this one just resonates with me as a writer. Sir Terry Pratchett's work is about how important stories are to humans and as a storyteller who grew up loving his books, unsurprisingly I feel the same way. He was the first celebrity where I was truly gutted when he died. Much love to everyone who was touched by his stories. 💖

One thing that #genAI has thoroughly soured for me is searching references for my artists to draw illustrations from and image search in general. Even with DuckDuckGo's "hide AI images", I get like 75% slop. It used to be fun to look through the search results, even if there were many results that weren't what I was looking for. But looking at slop is not fun. It's just tedious. It reminds me that I have to pay extra hard attention not to share AI slop by accident. I hate it.

#WordWeavers July 7: What writing or publishing resource do you think everyone should know about? I'm one of those people who write in a text editor. I'm using UltraEdit without AI bullshit. I create eBooks using LibreOffice and Calibre. It's not a particularly mind-blowing process but it works well for me and it is free except for the UltraEdit license if you don't pay for the open source software. I also like Pixabay.com for free photos to use for cover images. 🙂

I don't usually think that purity should stand in the way of the good but as you say yourself, you are a tool for artists and genAI is hurting artists. Anthropic is hurting your user base. I understand that FOSS projects need funding but this is a line in the sand moment.

@tinker I am neurotypical as far as I know and I have been online since 1999. Never, ever have I thought to myself "search would be better if I could just write the whole question". Search has been broken before AI, at least the boolean operators OR and NOT stopped working for me before the LLM hype. I think Google started "guessing what you meant" before that too. What I'm trying to say is that neurotypicals want the early web back too. Before it was colonised by corporations.

Replying to

@Ambulocetus@mefi.social @futurebird@sauropods.win It must be possible to somehow bypass that fear response because people suffocate from using a grill indoors because they fall asleep, probably by very slowly raising CO2 levels and reducing O2? But what I have witnessed is exactly what you describe, it looks like primal fear and I assume you have seen it too? Truly horrible and I would immediately replace it with nitrogen or helium if I were making laws.

@futurebird@sauropods.win I used to work at a place with a huge research mouse facility. At some point, there were too many mice taking up space and the decision was made to cull a lot of them. For my research, I had always killed the mice by hand before, breaking their neck. But the mice in the facility were killed in a gas chamber. Not with cyclon B, but with carbon dioxide. If you raise the CO2 percentage too quickly, they'll visibly suffocate. Horrid.
