i was recently sick in shanghal (not covid), and was impressed by their near-instant PCR testing (for 12 different pathogens!) services, so I documented it: https://winnielim.org/journal/the-experience-of-being-sick-in-shanghai/

also some commentary about the seemingly lack of care about health in society.

the experience of being sick in shanghai

Unfortunately I fell sick a couple of weeks ago in shanghai. Fortunately it was not covid. The experience was so interesting that I want to document it: So one day I woke up sneezing non-stop. My partner was also sneezing non-stop the day before, but we thought it was the pollen. She has MCAS, so...

We went to langkawi, malaysia to celebrate my partner's birthday. It is just an hour's flight from singapore. South-east asia has a plethora of sunny beaches, so in a way langkawi is strangely under-developed for a tourist beach destination, at least compared to places like phuket and bali. I have only been to langkawi once,...

some photos and thoughts on shanghai: "But I am yet reminded again why I travel despite not having much will for it anymore. It expands my imagination and perception of human beings. Sometimes it is easy to assume people are the same, or base our perception of “people” on the people we are exposed to. In just shanghai alone we have had many different encounters with people across a wide spectrum."

first impressions of shanghai

Recently I've been thinking how there is time, and then there are opportunities. We can have a lot of time, but there may not be the same opportunities. The covid lockdown is an example: there was time, but mobility was severely restricted. Sometimes almost everything is in place, but we are restricted by health and...

i struggled a lot with finishing posts because i tend to feel like i need to write something "complete" whatever "complete" means and explain things in great detail. these days i feel like i can say as little as i want or even publish a post that seems like i am saying something halfway. why not?

also belatedly realising *needing* to explain things in great detail and have some sense of completeness is probably an autistic trait.

i find it incredible that we can listen to some music from the 1950s-1970s at high quality. like you would expect crackling sounds or something due to old technology. some live concerts recorded back then sound miraculously incredible. like we managed to capture a fragment of time forever.

still selling it. need space. but i have serious emotional attachment to my gadgets even if they are unused.

After a week or so in shanghai we decided to go suzhou on a whim. It is only about 25 mins by their high-speed rail. The journey is faster than travelling to town from our home in Singapore. Suzhou is famous for their ancient water towns. It was surreal to see the old and the...

yesterday while writing this post i found a post i wrote 10 years ago that expressed my concerns about the difficulties the world was going to experience: https://winnielim.org/journal/the-lack-of-hope-in-our-future/ for me, it matters that i documented my psychological footsteps – because even back then this was how i perceived reality. it reminded me why publishing is important to me even though i don't feel it day to day. it allows me to know who i am, and who i was. #writing

I personally think the world is at the cusp of something larger than we are really capable of imagining – the Orlando shooting, the on-going unrest in the Middle East, Brexit, the Trump phenomenon, climate change, etc. People are observing 2016 is turning out to be an exceptionally negative year, I think what we’re observing...

the way i cope with my existential anxiety and dread is to write – so as usual i documented my thoughts on the middle eastern war, the surreality of it all, the cognitive dissonance because most people don't seem to care or know about its potential impact on the rest of the world: https://winnielim.org/journal/living-in-surreal-times/

I've been learning the piano for about 3 months now. When I first picked it up again I was very skeptical because I have a history of learning things at short intense bursts, before burning out. @csilverman@mastodon.social thank you for the responses! i think fidelity can be defined in different ways: in terms of technical fidelity like you'd said, for example the bitrate of an audio file; versus the audio fidelity in the sense how faithful it is to the original sound? like recording actual drums versus using midi files? so for me audio has lost its fidelity because everything sounds computer-generated/flat since they are no longer recording actual instruments.
