Have you ever listened to the _Rancho Deluxe_ soundtrack album? Worth a listen as perhaps the best C&W music of its era. Granted, it's probably the _only_ post-Marty-Robbins C&W I like. Aside from Emmylou Harris, if she counts as C&W. Or Lyle Lovett. Or, well, Riders In The Sky, or Asleep At The Wheel, or the Hot Club Of Cowtown, though I think of those as more western swing. Or King & Moore, or Joe Weed. Or the Steep Canyon Rangers, or Darol Anger, or Edgar Meyer, or Béla Fleck, or Edie Brickell, or the Québec Redneck Bluegrass Project, or Dave Alvin, or the Cowboy Junkies, or Jim Campilongo, or Tish Hinojosa, or Townes Van Zandt.

El Reg just published a useful article on SCION, although the headline is a little clickbaity.
A few of my own thoughts on the matter:
- The Internet, per se (the network of things which speak to each other using IPv4, IPv6, and their successors at layer 3), won't last forever.
- Whatever follows the Internet will have to be developed and adopted, and that will take a lot of work over a long (meaning probably 30+ years) time.
- Most projects fail.
- That means that, whatever the merits and demerits of SCION, _many_ projects like it need to be underway, temporally overlapping.

Nice!
May I suggest: browsers should not ”helpfully” accept fraudulent CA certs when a DANE cert doesn’t validate.

I’m having a parenting milestone tonight. Up waiting for one of my daughters to get home from a concert, for the first time. The irony being that it’s my younger daughter, while the elder one is asleep in bed.

I've only ridden belt-drive for the last ten years or so. All of my bikes now use a belt drive with Enviolo CVT and automatic shifting. Keeps the handlebars clean. :-)

That seems like an accurate summary. I was trying to test it by thinking of counter-examples, and there are certainly some dense ethnic enclaves in which (if you speak Amharic or Spanish or Hmong or whatever) you could certainly find fresh food grown locally at affordable prices, walking-distance from affordable (if probably very dense, and perhaps not code-compliant) housing. But those are very much the exceptions... islands-within-islands.

I'm often disproportionately attracted to display-faces, and I've been amused to see the recent revanchment or rehabilitation or whatever of blackletter, but anyway, I really liked the whimsy of this face, though it's clearly a hipster-catering-to-something-being-cool-again-in-the-moment thing. And using the blackletter fad to sneak in the lombardic capitals is cool. I always love it when people manage to piggyback something actually cool and obscure onto a pseudo-cool-and-obscure fad.

My wifi is boring, but this reminded me of my friend Greg, whose job, back in the day, was to run the group at DEC that shut down unauthorized AppleTalk zones on the DEC WAN. They had a hell of a travel budget, since they had to be able to fly anywhere in the world on a moment's notice to track down rogue FastPaths and GatorBoxes. He had a collection of the funny ones.

No, that's not what she said. She said "impossible to get to a place to buy basic grocery items without long distance drive." She didn't say that there were "local walkable shops." Local walkable shops is a thing that exists in Europe, but not in most of the US.

As an American living in France, I'm constantly being asked by Americans if I'm safe. Like, because of the constant rioting that they believe must be worse here than in the US. I have, a few times, tried to figure out specifically where the supposed riots are, and gotten on my bicycle to go check them out. I haven't actually found one yet. Each time that I've had time to try to track the story back, it turns into Russian disinfo ops and Fox News trying to perpetuate American fear.

I keep reflecting on the fact that we've reached an odd point of symmetry: the first twenty-four years of the Internet used a communist economic model, the next nine years a capitalist economic model, and then we've had twenty-four years of surveillance economic model.
Unfortunately, the third era doesn't seem to be drawing to a close.

I just checked the list price of the servers we use. Since December, it's gone up from $118k to $494k each. I mean, nobody pays list, but the folks with the shortest discounts get served first in markets like this. Which means that the AI bubble will get served before critical infrastructure.

I saw a video of a Ukrainian FPV drone operator jousting, too, with a broomstick attached to his drone.
