Purple is my natural hair color. I have strong opinions about software and sometime I even get to make them reality. Same for the state of the world in general, but I have a lot less influence there.
Professionally: Linux Graphics Plumbing for Qubes OS. Unprofessionally: aarch64laptops, postmarketOS, lots of random projects, local activism/politics.

I do hear plenty of criticism and skepticism even in IRL non-nerdy interactions buuuut, yes, holy shit, the annoying people on here have such a trigger-happy radical position that it's tiresome and it feels like they're about to harass you for being *just one little step below* the "every llm user ever must be burned at the stake and everyone who disagrees with that (even while hating llms) too" stance
Quoting
Reminder that fedi is an echo chamber in general, but it's an echo chamber _especially_ when it comes to LLMs. Go to literally any IRL tech-related community, any other social media platform or heck, just talk to your relatives and friends IRL. The thoughts and opinions on this site, esp. on this topic, do not in any way reflect a majority opinion.

Today in "the cyberpunk future we got": at a little local awards ceremony for partners of a cooperative bank, one neighborhood org was gifted —no joke— some RAM sticks, an SSD, and a bunch of food.
Absolutely last place I expected to encounter the DRAM&NAND crisis at but here we go

@firefoxwebdevs@mastodon.social 'The intent to ship on blink-dev states web developers as "Strongly positive"' wow. absolutely comical. People hate Mozilla for being too positive towards LLMs… nothing involving LLMs can have a "strongly positive" reaction. Just how high on their own supply are they at Goog? Did they get an LLM to generate the web developers' reaction?

Woooo hecking yes \o/ the True 100% Zero-Copy Fast Path for Wayland SHM sharing over virtio-gpu works!! This has been kind of an open side-quest for me for like a year. Finally was motivated to actually-just-do-it by the fact that on Xen it's actually easier to use "guest" memory rather than "host" (wellllll, I guess "in a clean upstreamable way" only, actually) and we'll need guest support for that and upstreaming said support will need a KVM-based demo so here it works on libkrun.
It does involve one slightly cursed(?) step which is that the Wayland proxy in the guest does just grow the provided pool memfds to align to page size but it seems like clients don't mind.
And wow I usually don't really think about just how fragmented memory buffers get, but udmabuf_create_list is currently limited to 1024 entries by default (configurable w/ udmabuf.list_limit=..) and these buffers are frequently spread across many thousands of discontinuous GPA ranges. The ridiculously massive buffer allocated by the foot terminal goes up to 40K ranges! i.e. just the command to make a shareable kernel object out of those guest memory ranges takes up close to a megabyte :D

@agowa338@chaos.social right, seems like one usually has to rig up some mosfets to get the legacy 5v behavior when the battery is dead and PD communication otherwise

@kuchenmampfer@chaos.social the screenshot is from aliexpress
yeah you can also just plug a C-to-A cable into an A-receptacle-to-C-plug adapter, or chain the A-receptacle-to-C-plug with the forbidden cursed C-receptacle-to-A-plug one etc.

@agowa338@chaos.social LOL but no, the Switch is mostly fine actually. It actually supports PD, even. This is about the junk that treats USB-C ports as if they were just micro-B. Like my label printer that I thought just broke, until I eventually plugged in a C-to-A cable and it started charging again…

@agowa338@chaos.social that's a silly issue, but no, if you have a smart device that actually talks PD over CC pins, it's not missing any resistors on those lines.

uhh podman/pasta needs netlink for itself but it sure shouldn't expose netlink to random programs inside of the container!

@mjg59@nondeterministic.computer @cubeos@hachyderm.io @david_chisnall@infosec.exchange it is always "on a dedicated secure enclave" but definitely not Microsoft hardware in all cases. You can easily confirm that from various vendor docs. On Qualcomm SoCs it's SPU firmware, and in fact the "bios" only loads the lite version which only contains the TPM and none of the chip-to-cloud stuff. Only Windows boots the full version.
