Hello #Canada
Just a reminder that the Canadian Senate resumes siting tomorrow 2026-9-28.

Now would be a good time to contact your Senator to express your opposition to #BillC22, the notorious piece of legislation that could drive a bull-dozer through your Charter rights.

Just a recap:
In June the Libs cut short all review of the bill with many groups not being given the opportunity to provide feedback.
It seemed that the decision was predetermined like some type of kangaroo court (call it Carney court if you like).

This bill will have serious implications for the future of all Canadians.
The ministerial orders could mean that secret spy-gear is installed at every ISP in Canada. No one really knows if a vpn would help protect you since no one really knows what the spy-gear will be able to do.

I am concerned that the spy-crap gear will be able to intercept internet traffic before a user could connect to a vpn server (a machine-in-the-middle attack for which there is no defense) or the machine logs into the vpn service for you and you would not know.

Your phone and internet bills could increase significantly to pay for overpriced spy-crap with inadequate security.
Will Chairman Xi have a backdoor?
Who knows?

You could start by adding your name to this campaign by @OpenMediaOrg@mastodon.social

Hello World:
If Bill C22 receives royal assent then the spy-crap gear could be coming to your country.
IMO privacy advocates all over the world should continue to monitor this story.

Hey #Canada
Please contact your Canadian Senators as soon as possible and urge them to reject Bill C22.

"An innocent man from Dartmouth, N.S., spent 18 months in prison because of a police typo"
https://www.ctvnews.ca/atlantic/nova-scotia/article/an-innocent-man-from-dartmouth-ns-spent-18-months-in-prison-because-of-a-police-typo/

Quote:
"... Police arrested [innocent man] and executed a search warrant, seizing phones and laptops from his home.
They were unable to find any evidence linking him to the offences, yet he was still sentenced to prison for his erroneous association with the alleged offender's username."

A man was convicted without any evidence linking him to the crime.
Talk about kangaroo court.

I expect more instances like this one if Bill C22 becomes law.

Could the spy-gear they want to install at every ISP be used as a weapon of intimidation?

Hey #Canada - it might be a good idea to follow what is happening in the UK about a proposed VPN ban as it could happen here as well.

Creating uncertainty around core Internet infrastructure could undermine the UK’s credibility as a stable place for digital businesses and security innovation. Bill C-22 — What Canadian Security Professionals Need to Know

Bill C-22 passed the House. The Senate is the last stop before this becomes law. Understand the risks and contact your Senator before September 21.

Please contact your Canadian Senators as soon as possible and urge them to reject Bill C22.

For anyone who believes the "if you have nothing to hide" crap.

Here is an example of how every level of the justice system failed one person.

"How a single underscore led to an innocent Halifax man's conviction"
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/how-a-single-underscore-led-to-an-innocent-halifax-man-s-conviction-9.7283149

An innocent man spent 18 months in jail.

The incompetance of law enforcement should be a concern for everyone.
I'm not convinced that anyone involved in this miscarriage of justice will ever be held accountable.

Now what happens after Bill C22 gets royal assent and law enforcement begins to issue arrest orders based on IP adresses?
What if the spy gear they want to install at every ISP makes a mistake or a police officer using such a system makes a mistake?
Could the actual IP address stored in the spy gear be modified by a bad actor?

Would a judge issue a search warrent based on an IP address that might not even be current?

Unless an ISP customer orders a static IP address then there is no way to be sure that an IP address would not change suddenly without notice.
I have seen IP addresses change in an instant (for example after some type of power blip).

Many police officers believe that IP addresses do not change with time.

IMO Bill C22 will make everything worse.
