New blog post on the GNOME Shell blog: All the things the design team has dreamed up in recent years that need *your help* to come to life 🙃 GNOME Shell development has gotten waaaay easier (literally run 2 scripts in /tools/toolbox to start a nested session with your changes), and I think the broader community hasn't quite caught on to this yet. If you haven't tried to build GNOME Shell in a while, I recommend giving it another try :) https://blogs.gnome.org/shell-dev/2026/08/11/gnome-shell-design-dreams

GNOME Shell & Mutter

GNOME Shell Design Dreams

The GNOME Shell user interface has mostly seen minor refinements and quality of life updates in recent cycles, but on the design side we've explored a lot of longer-term things we'd like to do. Some of these we have relatively complete plans for, others are more vague ideas that need more research and prototyping. As...

Playing with Nucleus, the periodic table app. Super impressed by the quality, so cool that people from the community are building this kind of thing independently nowadays, without (AFAIK) any direct involvement from the design team. It even just works™ on mobile 💖

Mahjongg was accepted into Circle! 🀄🀄🀄

It's one the historical GNOME games, but thanks to Mat's modernization work over the past few cycles it looks very fresh and clean nowadays. Welcome :)

I always find it odd when people talking about high level policy stuff like EuroStack completely ignore end-user devices - Like, if you have fully sovereign EU AI cloud apps, where are you going to access them from? Your iPhone?

GUADEC in Italy was dope, why did we wait 25 years to do one there :D

GUADEC 2025

Last week was this year’s GUADEC, the first ever in Italy! Here are a few impressions. Local-First One of my main focus areas this year was local-first, since that’s what we’re working on right now with the Reflection project (see the previous blog post). Together with Julian and Andreas we did two lightning talks (one...

Replying to

@shibacomputer@post.lurk.org @davidbenque@mastodon.ie @sjef@post.lurk.org @laura@mastodon.laurakalbag.com we don't really have anything like this for GNOME because 1. the free software tools all suck so most of us are still using Inkscape since it's at least native, and 2. mockups play a secondary role in how we work - libadwaita and the HIG do a lot of the heavy lifting :) Some people have tried to set up an Adwaita design system thing using Penpot in the past, but no idea how comprehensive those were.
