I really can't stop looking at this photo - We usually think of space as being entirely empty and dark, but our Sun has a lot of dust around it that we can rarely see. This so called Zodiacal light is giving the moon this eerie backlit glow.

And four people really have been there and witnessed this yesterday, absolutely blows my mind!

Orion in the Eclipse

The Moon, backlit by the Sun during a solar eclipse, is photographed by NASA’s Orion spacecraft on April 6, 2026, during the Artemis II mission. Orion is visible in the foreground on the left. Earth is reflecting sunlight at the left edge of the Moon, which is slightly brighter than the rest of the disk. The bright spot visible just below the Moon’s bottom right edge is Saturn. Beyond that, the bright spot at the right edge of the image is Mars. This is a HDR merge combining the long exposure a

Last November the ESA JUICE Spacecraft captured the interstellar comet 3I/Atlas shortly after its closest approach to the sun.

Here is my reprocessed version of the Juice NavCam images from this encounter. For this animation I removed the static noise and aligned the images to the nucleus.

Two stunning views from the Launch Abort System Jettison

Original video here:

I have made some slight color adjustments and reverted the SuperView distortion used by these modified GoPro cameras.

This video was recently published by #ESA, but it was extremely dark, so it was hard to see details. Thanks to the ESA media team who provided me with a higher quality version, I was able to recover lots of shadow details and correct the hotpixel noise. It still seems unreal to me that humans will soon be flying back to the moon! They will be returning to Earth at a speed of 40.000 km/h, the fastest ever reentry of a crewed spacecraft.

To get an idea what such a reentry looks like, I made this remastered version of the Artemis 1 reentry from 2022 with trajectory data overlayed.

Gigantic jets (part of the Transient Luminous Event phenomena) typically form over intense tropic thunderstorms. Current research suggest they are initiated by intra-cloud lightning that triggers a discharge up into the ionosphere. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upper-atmospheric_lightning#Gigantic_jets

@brunoph pretty crazy what phenomena our planet can produce, right? This second video is at 50% speed, the first one in the thread starts out in realtime, then 50% and finally 25% speed. The whole event only lasted a second or so which is actually quite long for this sort of thing!

It's incredible to me that the SOHO spacecraft that took these images is already more than 28 years old! And it almost didn't make it past the two year mark when contact to it was lost in 1998. The story of how it was recovered is really worth a read: https://www.theregister.com/2020/07/29/esa_soho_space_extenders/

@TimWardCam Yeah, there is no go-around with a glider, so we have to practice landings very well before departing on such a flight. There are established meadows that are (probably) safe to land and we always keep them in safe gliding distance in case the thermals run out. I really like the challenge of it, plus its a very calm and peaceful way of flying.

You can actually see the small blue leader develop above the cloud before it fully discharges as a gigantic jet with vibrant purple and red colors. After the jet disappears, the leader flickers a few times and surprisingly produces a second jet shortly afterwards. That's something I have not seen before!

I processed this from the raw data which looks a lot different - it's dominated by sunglare, so it's hard to see the stars or the solar wind. The comet nucleus is also very overexposed, which I repaired in the version above. The raw data can be accessed here: https://umbra.nascom.nasa.gov/pub/lasco/lastimage/level_05/

Replying to
@markmccaughrean@mastodon.social I can only imagine, those badly matched backgrounds were the reason I didn't finish my last JWST processing attempt. Later this year I hope to dig into the jwst pipeline (thankfully a lot of it is python) to see if I can improve things there. Probably not in a way that will be accurate enough for science products, but at least as an improved starting point for image processing.

@wikkit@mastodon.social Sounds like an interesting challenge, but I'm not aware of any. Currently we probably don't have suitable stereo data to do proper 3D mapping of the tail. However, there are two very interesting papers about 2D spatio-temporal mapping of comet tails, by projecting the image data into the orbital plane of the comet.
