The US government is pushing for mandatory ID requirements for voting. "All you have to do is show your birth certificate that matches your legal name."

Can you imagine a 75 year old woman who has been remarried three times showing her chain of legal name change documents?

"And here's my marriage certificate from Harold... he was such a sweet man. He passed away in 76 at such a young age...

And my marriage certificate to Jasper 5 years later. Sorry for the water stains on that, it got soaked when our attic started leaking...

Divorce papers and legal name change after Jasper cheated on me...

And finally my marriage certificate to Gertrude! We tied the knot when gay marriage became legal in 2008. We decided to swap last names."

I feel like there is an artistic skill to making good alt texts. Has anyone already written about this?

For example, my method is:

1. Decide what story I want to tell. What was joyful about this moment that I captured in a photo?

2. Describe the subject with some basic color (e.g. "A dark brown salamander") and maybe some context about where the subject is located ("on a campfire log")

3. Describe what gives me joy. Is it the salamander's little toes? The wet rain drops on its body? The way it's peeking up over the edge of the campfire log with its bead-like eyes? All of that? Put it in the alt-text!

I tend to describe the parts that give me joy in the order my eye "flows" over the picture.

Most people stop at describing the general subject and background. But they are missing out on sharing their joy with people who use screen readers! I wish more people would spread #AltTextJoy

Help me figure out what time to run my monthly Code of Conduct Enforcement workshops.

http://otter.technology/code-of-conduct-training/

With people needing training in Europe, Africa, Asia, Latin America, and North America, it's impossible to find one single workshop time that works for everyone. So each month I pick a different time zone to best accommodate.

If you are a conference organizer, please let me know which month and time you need training!

You can either fill out the form, or send an email to sharp@otter.technology
