I remember hearing Johnny Nash, the Staple Singers, and The Sweet on WLS-AM.
I must have a false memory of hearing the Jean Genie on the radio as a child - it only reached 71 on the US chart.
Most of the rest I didn't hear until the early '80s, or in some cases, much later.

I just twigged the moral. Previously I thought it was still talking about baseball, and that the "Main" was the field (or village green or whatever).
Instead it's saying baseball is a metaphor for the pursuits of the British Empire - "the Main" being, duh, the high seas.

The only ones I actually heard in 1980 are Ramones, Clash, Undertones, and Epicycle (they went to my school).
Quite a lot I listened to in the early 80s, though.
Some stuff I didn't get around to until five years later (Bunnymen, Funky 4 Plus 1)

Don't think so. It seems the Broadway production of West Side Story was in 1957-1959 and in a different theatre.

@Chancerubbage I think skiffle was. Although it was seen as a youth phenomenon not adults. I read there were an estimated 10,000 skiffle groups at one point.
