How about we all ban fifa instead?
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7331375/2026/06/04/fifa-bottle-ban-commercial-concerns/
I am already not buying over priced tickets and I will not be watching any of the matches
They ruined the beautiful game

@riley@toot.cat I am sorry, this is not correct analogy
The bot not giving you correct information 100% of the time doesn't make them useless
A Search engine doesn't give you the correct answer all the time.
Chatbots are incredibly helpful. Don't take the answer as 100% correct, review and research accuracy after you get the answer but they save you immense amount of time from searching yourself
Think of them as hiring a jr employee or assistant. They are helpful but you must review their work

One of the topics @evan talked about expanding the OSW was AP integration in existing platforms
I think LinkedIn is most likely to convince compared to the other popular ones

mmmm that's not a good advice to be honest, especial for the brave soul volunteering to be instance admins
If you break the law you would be fined. For most volunteer type instances the fine is guaranteed bankruptcy if not financial ruins

That is a very good question.
It is reality that needs to be addressed. Hiding our heads in the sand and pretending like LLMs are useless is not the solution though.
I have been warning about this happening for almost 10 years, nobody cared since then, even today it seems the only vocal ones are those in the denial stage

If you have a Hotel or a restaurant you can absolutely hire a dishwasher, or buy a machine to do it
And these discussions are not new, every time a machine replaced a job there would be a major discussion, if anything, there isn't enough discussions now, at the very least there should be strikes, protests, union actions, talk of UBI etc which sadly is not happening.
The world is moving at a much faster pace, and everyone is having the wrong discussion as AI takes their jobs away

How many of those who "can write own code" actually know machine code or even assembly language.
And do you think less of them if they can't do that?

When assemblers arrived it was a big step forward, then compilers and interpreters made our lives even easier.
Back in the day we had to debug the compiler output because it wasn't perfect. Many were also skeptical about compilers and performance of compiled code. Years later it became the most common way to code
I think prompt engineering is not very much different, just has a lower barrier to entry, and we are still baby steps now

@strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz to be honest, these are not features of federation, and not all federated platforms provide them
Portability exists on Bluesky but not here for example( you can only port your graph). Bluesky decentralization is great for PDS but limited to on the appview side
Threads is "federated" but good luck moving lol
Maybe we are just promising something that's not fully baked :-)
But yeah in a sense, talk about the benefits - a language they understand - and not how it's done

Clunky is putting it lightly because you CANNOT switch instance, you delete your account and start a new one.
You can transfer your social graph but lose everything else (posts, private messages, likes bookmarks, everything is lost).
I would not call this switching nor changing user name, that's a social graph copy to a new account

If we want to talk about decentralization, try to switch your account here to another instance and see what happens?
Forget that, try to change your user name and see what happens.
These are basic things that work very well on ATmosphere, things that I believe are core to decentralization which you cannot do
Every protocol has it's faults, let's not put down the ones we don't understand

A computer is not a human, but tools can replace humans to do certain job if not better.
If you don't like dishwashers, laundry machines, sewing machines, tractors and diggers then by all means hire someone to do it, but most of us find it more effective to use machines instead
I would rather focus my time on building more complex things than waste it on doing less complex jobs that a machine (or AI) can easily do in less time

I am sorry, this appears to be written by someone who hasn't used LLMs in a useful way and just making philosophical arguments about something they don't fully understand. Not very different from those riding horses, and making arguments against cars.
They are very useful, they can produce good code and save time, it DOES require review the same way every code written by a jr engineer should be reviewed
To claim LLMs aren't useful is as absurd as claiming Jr staff isn't useful

Also, to be honest, I don't understand the voter id problem. Ask for ID and if you don't have ID you get a provisional ballot that requires citizenship proof later.
This is done in vast majority of countries. We are talking about t tiny percentage here, make it a non-issue and move on to more important ones

Take Canada as an example, with 100% publicly funded system (not great but covers 100%).
Yes, tax payers pay for it, in fact 19-20% of taxes go to pay healthcare
Contrast that with the US, tax payers fund Medicare and Medicaid, 24% of their taxes go to fund these programs
i.e. the US tax payers are paying MORE than Canadians. These programs cover only 35% of US population
The irony, Americans pay more in taxes on programs that don't cover most of them

Sure, you can object but that wouldn't make a difference sadly except for you.
Almost all software that's being built today is using LLMs in one way or another, you are not going to isolate yourself, are you?
What needs to happen is address societal issues. We need protests, strikes, unions, talk about UBI, change economic structure and taxation.
How will people feed themselves?
Personally objecting will only means you'd be out of a job sooner than others

impressions is the most accurate measure, most (if not all) platforms used it but then X changed it to "views" which is not accurate (your post are displayed but not viewed, unlike videos) and hence everyone switched to views
Engagement is a good metric but not as good as impressions, for example if you want traffic to your website impressions resulting in clicks are far more important than likes

@MastodonEngineering@mastodon.social Here are some ideas:
- Account creation should only be done by the instance not apps
- Accounts cannot be created without confirming email first
- Emails that are not on popular services (e.g. gmail, hotmail, yahoo etc) should prompt a difficult captcha to solve even before verification is sent

ugh, spam is an industry
I remember years ago a group of users used our service to coordinate twitter attacks by creating massive threads (at the time, we were the only service that lets you schedule threads), dozens of accounts creating 100+ post threads of , so it's thousands of spam tweets/second
The result? We limited threads to only 10 posts in the free plan and the service sucked for all free users...
Few rotten applies just had to ruin it for everyone else

No, you absolutely do not have to hire someone to wash the dishes, having a machine means you can delegate responsibility to someone who does many things instead of washing dishes full time.
And that's OK, you don't have to use chatbots, but most people would lose their jobs one day because they dismissed it instead of actually doing something about it.

Not the city I live in - boooring, but the city I grew up in - yes many!
I was going to say Dolma but that's common in other countries, so I will pick Kubba Hamuth - because I think despite our heavily influenced cuisine none of our neighbours make it
There is really nothing that tastes like Kubba Hamuth, we make it with rice
It takes 6-10 hours to make, so a lazy cook like me would not even attempt to make it, but I love eating it :-0)

If you host your own instance you should be safe but public instances need to do the comply too!
Instance admin refusing to comply with the law doesn't make legal to do so
https://techcrunch.com/2025/08/29/mastodon-says-it-doesnt-have-the-means-to-comply-with-age-verification-laws/
If the admin gets sued then your instance will be gone also you will lose all your content
Once enough people join the Fediverse we would get noticed by regulators and lawsuits/shutdown notices will start rolling

Oh I read the article, and I understood that the author has never used LLM or even understands it, it is very obvious, maybe not to you but it is for me.
And YES, it is very offensive to even hint that being anti-AI is "the same" as being anti-war that killed almost half a million of my own people.
The fact that you don't see it as offensive, makes me sad. I thought people here are better than other platforms

It's not only about coding unfortunately, the changes will be drastic across different industries. Robotics will be huge and will hit blue collar jobs soon too.
People are really not prepared for this. The only way to solve this is by forcing governments to act on changing laws, taxation and economic structure.

The article you shared is terrible, clearly written by someone who hasn't used AI.
Those who don't like something need to offer an alternative, don't just "oppose the war" then vote for the guys who brought the war. Don't drum up climate change when you are not carbon neutral yourself!
I am from Iraq BTW and I find his comparison to be very offensive
