500 schematics, 700 letters, vintage synths, publications, personal effects from Dr. Bob, prototype models, and more: thanks to a major gift from inMusic, the Bob Moog Foundation has massively expanded its collection. It makes the history that much more whole. Here are some images to give you a glimpse.

NI, iZotope, Brainworx, Plugin Alliance... who even owns what? And what's happening with the craftspeople who make oboes and trumpets? (Seriously, there are some big shakeups) Your cheat sheet for the NI afterscape and other M&A in 2026... so far. https://cdm.link/ni-after-ni-which-brand-is-where-and-who-owns-whom/ #thepresentofsound

NI after NI: which brand is where, and who owns whom - CDM Create Digital Music

Native Instruments, iZotope, Plugin Alliance, and Brainworx being part of inMusic? That was early May; now only NI remains at inMusic. 2026' mergers and acquisitions have come so fast, you practically need a reference to keep up. So... let's do just that. It's part of a larger pattern of ownership changes and layoffs across every part of the music instrument business.

Vintage Max patches revived: free downloads, Leafcutter John and Suren - CDM Create Digital Music

Suren Seneviratne (My Panda Shall Fly) has been painstakingly cataloging lost software, oldschool patches, and retro musical practices, reviving old machines and software and breathing new life into them. But now, we get some classic Max patches, remade for the current era of Max patches. Download them for free, and listen in as Suren interviews Leafcutter John and John interviews Suren.

Septabee, an insane-looking free Linux/Windows DAW with pomegranates - CDM Create Digital Music

Suddenly, a bunch of the producers I follow are buzzing about the music-mangling possibilities of Septabee, a free DAW for Linux and Windows developed "in secret" over "20,000 hours." And it looks like insane fun: a bonkers dataflow interface and "violently unfinished" early-access software available through an intentionally broken website that autoplays music and makes you hunt for the click zone like it's 1994.

That's not even the only NLnet-funded project at #superbooth either! I just added all of these to the top of my to-do list for this weekend:

It's more than just customization: it's a way of thinking about your workspace and music in hues and shades.*

This is why companies should hire me, and then I'll tell them to claim their userid on the fediverse and don't cede it to fake accounts or exclusively make an Elon Musk-owned dumpster fire their primary channel. Ahem.

Try sonifying data free, with the MFA Datafree MIDI Generative Tool for Ableton Live.

I did a step-by-step walkthrough on how to use freely accessible temperature data from @openmeteo@fosstodon.org ! Here's the last week or so in Berlin.

More:

Gives me some ideas for more to do with Open-Meteo, too.

Now, raw data can be a musical source in Ableton Live 12 Clips -- for free. Manifest Audio's Datafree shows the potential of Live's Generators, transforming any pasted numbers into music and sound. There's a deeper rabbit hole to go down, but here's a great way to start. Let's try it with freely accessible climate data and make some weather-based melodies.

@Gargron That feels like it was a poll between "which of you live somewhere with a real summer" and "which of you are in Berlin"

@oleksiy @mdmkz @dreamer yeah, I mean apart from the russian part it sounds like what *I* would do with the account, but not Ableton :D

Hey, so anybody else out there using CrowdSec?

Attempting this via nginx ... at least I do see most of the bot/attack traffic that's been slamming CDM last months (which I've been manually blocking) has come from known IPs.

CrowdSec config though is... not n00b-friendly.

It's summer (or winter, depending on hemisphere), and that means you deserve to take a break and listen to some quality Final Fantasy soundtracks in acoustic cover form.

FFIX flamenco!

The Square Enix Music Channel remains a gift to the Internet. So in this dire summer for the gaming industry (layoffs, the end of physical media, console price hikes), let's keep the faith and listen to NieR played on hammered dulcimer. This, too, shall pass.

Turn up Jaymie Silk's 2-volume Reclaim the Music and Transform Ur Mind:

Turn up Jaymie Silk's 2-volume Reclaim the Music and Transform Ur Mind - CDM Create Digital Music

Jaymie Silk just dropped volume 2 of Reclaim the Music, his spontaneous summer all-hardware bangers. It's hard-hitting oldschool techno, it's got that 90s sound (especially thanks to a vintage compressor), and it also has explosions of percussion that are true to African roots. "909, 808, percussions, groove." You should check his calls to activism, too.
