#svpol #avskaffamonarkin

@jonny@neuromatch.social for me the biggest thing currently is 'doing different things with either hand' which as a brass musician is just brain-breaking.

This also means that the best way forward is to be restrictive in the feature set, to make code slowly, carefully, and with a deep and committed engineering mindset both at the level of the code itself, through good architecture and well-defined modules and interfaces, and at the level of the organisation, with multiple points of both human and automated review that can verify such proofs and guaratees, as well as run internal fuzzing.

@Jonas_Bostrom@mastodonsweden.se @jon@gruene.social Trafikverket is, apart from budgets, the major barrier to reasonable train experience in Sweden, it seems to me. If I were a politician I would argue for an immediate reseparation into road/rail/air agencies again, so that mode costs and shares can be meaningfully brought back under control, and such that people who hate trains and want them to fail don't get to decide about their operation and infrastructure.

@glynmoody@mastodon.social I don't think the subjectivity can really be sidestepped, nor the interplay between state, capital and what is 'generally considered'. In particular, I think you can just as (or more) easily make the same case for the greatest art being inspired and funded by the Catholic Church.

This Jacobin article (or rather, screenshots of the headline and selected paragraphs) on family abolition and heteropessimism has been doing the rage circuit on Bluesky, but I have to say I found it quite interesting, if not completely comprehensive. The point seems to me to less a denigration of family abolition or feminism and more an explanation and exploration of them.

curl seems to be an inspiration in this context, at least from the outside looking in, but I do wish that infrastructural code in general would be better at committing to standards, to ABIs and APIs, and to make sure that standards for outside communications are _always_ made in a protocol that can be provably correctly parsed.

@dgoldsmith@mastodon.social eh not really in this particular post. Properly managed ecologies do definitely store more carbon than impoverished monocultures.

@szbalint@mastodon.social this is also inaccurate, since certain passive methods absorb, redirect, or reflect that energy in ways ACs don't.

Just had a bizarre cell phone experience where I just missed a call, so called back, got a connection and heard a few words, after which it was cut. Then I got a text saying that I got a new voicemail. Which was the continuation of that call????
Incredible that we actually had a functional phone system and have managed to fuck that up completely somehow.

Stupid realisation: on a chromatic button accordion, Giant Steps is real easy on the melody side and wildly awkward on the bass side.

@celesteh@post.lurk.org I'd say charitably that he's more FDR than Raegan in that he's working frantically to save capitalism from its own inherent and heightening contradictions, and as such are taking these positions directionally in a positive, rather than negative direction.

@szbalint@mastodon.social yes, because AC does, in fact, heat up the city while passive methods do not. Don't get me wrong, there are many other actions also needed, not least plant cover, but if you can achieve good enough cooling with passive methods, that is always preferrable to AC.

@mattdm@hachyderm.io Incidentally, this is also the correct answer to Omelas: It is stated in the story many times that the child is not actually necessary for the society, but only for its "realism" to us the readers, and this is not hidden away, it is stated explicitly.
"Now do you believe them? Are they not more credible?"

I have to say, these make a fascinating pairing. I'm not sure what I expected from Ministry for the Future, but what is there is both fascinating in its own right, and very clearly something written a few crucial years ago. Dennis' book, meanwhile, is just a few years younger, and nonfiction rather than marketed as 'a novel' (though I think MotF is not adequately labelled as simply such), but clearly points at similar problems and solutions through the particular lens of the railway.
