📢 Excited about our (Louisa Kulke & Fatima Felisberti) new paper in Motivation & Emotion! It echoes a theme from my recent ISRE talk: rigorous methods, precise estimates, and theory-driven predictions are essential if we want cumulative emotion science. #emotion #bayesian #empathy #jasp #OpenScience #Preregistration #opendata #opencode https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11031-026-10266-x

Judging emotional authenticity from dynamic facial expressions: a preregistered Bayesian analysis of individual differences - Motivation and Emotion

Accurately judging whether another person’s emotional display is genuine or deliberate is a core component of social interaction, yet prior research linking this ability to socio-cognitive traits has produced mixed and imprecise findings. Much of this inconsistency stems from small samples, static stimuli, and analytic approaches that overstate weak effects. In a high-precision preregistered study (N = 605), we examined how Theory of Mind, empathy, and alexithymia relate to emotional authenticit

@tomstafford one of the first thing every student/researcher is taught is the importance of random sampling and randomization... and then they go ignore all that and just pretend it's all good (for instance, you can't directly compute p-values in observational studies as the null distribution is not known)

A Meta-Analysis of the Impact and Heterogeneity of Explicit Demand Characteristics

Demand characteristics are a fundamental methodological concern in experimental psychology. Yet, little is known about the direction, magnitude, and consistency of their effects. We conducted a three-level meta-analysis of 253 effect sizes from 53 studies that manipulated explicit demand characteristics (EDCs). On average, EDCs led to small overall increases in hypothesis-consistent responding (g = 0.21, 95% CI [0.11, 0.30]). However, the effects were heterogeneous (between-study τ = 0.29; withi
