Today's 16km (175 football fields for our imperial friends) forest hike was very photogenic

Achievement unlocked: managed to modify an existing 3D model (STL) in #FreeCAD

I essentially followed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBf5GWs65BE, TL;DW:

- Import STL, go to Part workbench
- Create shape from mesh (sew)
- Convert to solid
- Create a copy > Refine shape
- Switch to part design, create a new body (from scratch)
- In the new body, add a binder to the refined shape.
- Create sketches, pad and pocket as necessary!

My kids' #gaming experience has been spoiled by #Minecraft.

I'm now playing #TalosPrinciple2 and they keep asking what happens if I destroy this or that, not understanding those are pretty, highly detailed, but static and immutable game assets.

I just ran out of disk space on my VPS.

Fortunately I left an unused 2GB `/swap` file that I was able to delete and get some breathing room for cleanup operation while the sever continues running.

Upgrading my #RaspberryPi5 from Bookworm to Trixie.

Mid upgrade the terminal window suddenly disappears as it's upgraded and I'm left with a pending upgrade process waiting for some input 🤦

kill -9 and retry "apt upgrade" seems to work for now...

That's what I get for not closing the browser after use. I should enable NoScript.

I vibe-coded a tool to explore embedding models - it's just a page that calls out to llama-server and renders the computed values as pixels.

I tried the embeddinggemma model and noticed there are some "hot elements" (like "hot pixels" on a camera sensor), always stuck to some out-of-distribution value. Why? Is it some model marker? No one looked at it prior to release? Does it fulfill a function? How does it affect comparisons?

It's like if a hash function always had some bits set to 0 or 1...

Watching the Olympics, the ever present camera drones following the contestants remind me of Half-Life 2 manhacks.

https://half-life.fandom.com/wiki/Manhack

Manhack
Half-Life Wiki

Manhack

The Manhack, referred to as Viscerator by the Overwatch Voice and simply Hack by Citizens and Rebels, is a flying, gyroscopic drone with three razor-sharp blades that constantly spin at extremely high speeds. They are able to cause mediocre damage to anything they collide with. Manhacks are small anti-personnel devices that use razor-sharp propeller blades for both propulsion and attack. Their spinning blades produce a high-pitched whirring sound, which is often an indicator of their...

Trying to use an older, un-updated Android tablet (2GB RAM) on the modern web is really testing my patience ("can you look at this" from relatives).

I managed to install Firefox 143 from APK, which is the last version supported on this device, so at least I won't see all the "unsafe website (untrusted certificate)" and I managed to install NoScript and Ublock Origin...

Very insightful article about zram vs zswap:

https://chrisdown.name/2026/03/24/zswap-vs-zram-when-to-use-what.html

I will be changing from zram to zswap on my desktop soon. I will still keep some zram as a compressed in-memory temp storage, but not as swap.

#Sauerbraten is a first person shooter (2004 era) that runs smoothly* on all the computers in my home, has a dedicated server, allows bots (ranging from stupid to snipes-you-from-across-the-map), lots of maps and game modes and has built-in multiplayer map editing.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cube_2:_Sauerbraten

*On the #RaspberryPi500 it needs to run under Wayland to have smooth FPS for some reason (Xfce X11 => 10fps, Xfce Wayland => 60fps).

While exploring the Hormuz strait on the map I found this curiousity:

> Nahwa is a territory that forms part of the Emirate of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. It is a counter-enclave (or second-order enclave) within the Omani territory of Madha, which is itself an exclave of Oman and an enclave within the United Arab Emirates.
