@benroyce@mastodon.social I saw the comment ages ago that humans are to animals what the fey are supposed to be to humans. If all else fails, ask the humans for help. They're capricious and sometimes they eat you but sometimes they actually help.

@mattblaze@federate.social Any complex project has the capacity to run off the rails. "Going rogue" is a reasonable colloquial descriptive phrase even an engineer might use in passing. It isn't meant to imply the project has a will of its own, only that it's no longer performing the expected purpose. It's only in the era of fake AGI that we suddenly have to be so extremely careful with our wording. The general public has been conditioned to think this is all magic and demonology.

@arstechnica@mastodon.social That's exactly what we're supposed to do to protect ourselves when traveling through problematic authoritarian ports like China, Russia or the USA. The only alternative is that nobody ever travels to these places.

@VeeRat@zeroes.ca Lately all the Microsoft IDE stuff has flipped into "CoPilot does everything" and replaced working IntelliSense with garbage. This last week was when I noticed it because SQL Server Management Studio stopped being able to autocomplete an existing table name. Just days ago I could trust tab completion and suddenly that's dead too.

@BlackAzizAnansi@mas.to We let corporations own culture as soon as we decided to legally honor intellectual property. Ownership of ideas is an abomination we won't recover from if we don't collectively commit to eradicating it.

@dbattistella@mstdn.ca For a machine we have now confirmed in the wild is subject to manipulation by Israeli and Russian online publishing of their propaganda explicitly aimed at corrupting LLM answers. We can't trust anything with a profit motive, nationalist backing and opaque operations to serve as a repository of knowledge.

@TreeVor@dice.camp @anolandria@mastodon.social Exactly. They are authoritarian right to their very core of their being. They literally don't even have their own stable internal identity. If the power structure doesn't tell them who they are, they panic.

@DemocracyMattersALot@mstdn.social We don't need a domestic kidnap and murder squad funded by the federal government. Maybe we can put that money into finding all the women and girls Trump's buddies are trafficking and murdering instead.

Ditched pages and pages and pages of followed/followers who have been dormant since before 2026. I forgot it was an option and let it get out of hand before I got reminded. #houseCleaning

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org Even someone I already know is well-off is off-putting when they're that brand conscious.

@gimulnautti@mastodon.green @amerpie@social.lol It's the only fair way. They voluntarily subject themselves to the treatment to show us the way or they admit they have no credibility or reasonable argument.

@drewph@ieji.de @arstechnica@mastodon.social It's the smarter option for anyone who has it. I live here, I'm stuck, but anybody who isn't already here can still save themselves.

@marcotietz@infosec.exchange @stacey_campbell@aus.social @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org @saprentice@mastodon.social I feel like there were always one-hit wonders but the 90s was really where they totally dominated the airwaves.

@blogdiva@mastodon.social @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org That's probably part of the grift. They got all the money they could from rich people, now they move down a tier to take money from the wannabe rich. Invent new haute brands and start over with the rich...

@wjmaggos@liberal.city @Lazarou@mastodon.social @gabboman No. MAGAts must be ostracized until they come to their senses. Normalizing them and coddling them only increases the amount of time they spend actively harming others.

@Wen@mastodon.scot Europe is still all in on LLM crap like every other government. It's like taking up smoking on your way into the cancer clinic. There's no seriousness in any proposal that doesn't start with *not* building more data centers.

@carnage4life@mas.to @idahobucks@mastodon.social How many are bots he paid for and can no longer be audited because he closed all the API access useable for audit?

@mikeolson@mastodon.social @pluralistic@mamot.fr Even incorrect responses have value to an expert who is tinkering with an idea and can use the randomized inputs to inspire new perspectives. "Wrong, but interesting" has value to an expert that it doesn't for a non-expert.

@arstechnica@mastodon.social But they also consume water and energy resources more disproportionately than any previous technology mankind has ever devised. They're burning the planet to death in service to making a few more million dollars before they die too. It's a death cult and they're taking us all with them.

@parismarx@mastodon.online Because the media measures morality and ethics in petrodollars.

@tusk81@mastodon.social The Declaration laid it out, "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" are inalienable rights for all mankind. It's not limited by race, sex, creed, citizenship, nationality or anything else. All you have to be is human and the founders explicitly said you deserve those 3 things inherently.

@Nonilex@masto.ai Impunity is the root of so many evils.

@darkuncle@infosec.exchange My grandfather was a woodworker who preferred hand tools because in his words "You make mistakes slower with hand tools". It sounds silly but it's a genuinely good argument. If you're going to keep it in service for 60 years, what's another week or two of building going to matter?

@darkuncle@infosec.exchange The concepts embodied in "appropriate technology" need to be reinjected into the zeitgeist. We need to stop talking about whether it does the thing and start talking about whether it's the best way to do the thing.

@nixCraft@mastodon.social @LoganFive@beige.party There was a tongue in cheek "evergreen" review a while ago - "Just buy whatever the current Brother laser printer is". I couldn't swear to it still being true but that was basically the industry consensus for a decade.

@VeroniqueB99@mastodon.social The FDA said testing wasn't required, not that it was required to stop. Every food producer immediately stopped because capitalist self-regulation isn't a real thing.

@VeroniqueB99@mastodon.social "Not physically competent to survive an election" isn't a strong recommendation for their guy as POTUS.

@gottalaff.bsky.social I have to assume it's because they approve of the picks and the agenda.

@paninid@mastodon.world I couldn't force myself to do homework. Aced the tests, did all the reading, just couldn't keep up with the busywork because my brain was bored with the endless repetition and practice of boring shit. I failed a physics class while actually tutoring my lab group and getting 90-100% on every test. I wish I'd been able to focus on the homework in some meaningful way but I was totally out of steam after pretending to be normal all day.

@MugsysRapSheet@mastodon.social I'm still eagerly awaiting Schumer's investigation into the matter.

@ceartas@mastodon.world What works is freely giving people the resources they need. What doesn't work is criminalization, debtors prisons, pogroms against the homeless, stigmatization. America will always pick dehumanizing punishment over rehabilitation. It always has and it shows zero signs of changing.

@mattsheffield@mastodon.social Convincing our electeds to put any binding guardrails on themselves going forward is a major project. Neither party is interested in giving up their insider trading, AIPAC ratings or other entrenched power.

@nixCraft@mastodon.social Supply chain and power. Parts wear out. Software has bugs and vulnerabilities. Batteries and fuel cells run out. Maintenance downtime on most robots is way more than zero and they're mostly being used in clean and controlled environments rather than sandstorms, swamps and oceans.

@paninid@mastodon.world Those aren't mistakes though, they're "chilling effects". The misses are as useful as the hits and maybe moreso. They make a big splash about their secret police bounties and assholes then go report all their least favorite neighbors for cash prizes *and* the Gestapo disappears everybody for them. Trust degrades. Everybody stays home from the protest for fear their neighbors are informants and the fascism grows apace.

@Tutanota@mastodon.social LLMs can't perform as advertised. Even if the training canon had been filled out ethically and consensually, and the cognitive impacts were mitigated, the hardware requirements are still killing humanity. They can't operate without waivers on environmental protection, water rights, power generation... They're literally toxic to humanity just to run them at all regardless of their work product.

@paninid@mastodon.world What if we examine the forces that took out all of the slack from our daily lives such that it's hard to find a moment to read a book, go to the park, hang out with a friend IRL... What if the phones are a surrogate for all the things we used to do when it wasn't necessary for every person to be working full time with no sick leave? Or parental leave? Or a "third place" we could go?

@ADHDruid@infosec.exchange @noodlemaz@mstdn.games @eff@mastodon.social When I can copy it and sell copies without legal repercussions is when I literally own it. Unless that's true, it's all at the pleasure of the publishers.

@paninid@mastodon.world @gottalaff.bsky.social Ockham's Razor - the simplest answer here is "They want to".

@mattblaze@federate.social No, I think policing the language that engineers use for a media who refuses to understand or follow up with clarifying questions is a problem. We're facing this problem because the media has stopped caring whether they are translating accurately for their audience.

@LordCaramac@discordian.social @BlackAzizAnansi@mas.to As long as the dumb legal framework continues, share-alike should be the universal default license.

@xxv@mastodon.social This is really sweet.

@nixCraft@mastodon.social Isn't the appropriate first task for such an entity always self-improvement? I don't know how we're meant to take them seriously about the recursive and geometrically accelerating self-improvement when they use the same words to describe "somewhat improved text prediction".

@heidilifeldman@mastodon.social He will lose if he doesn't cheat, therefore he will cheat. There's no way around that. He's not *planning* to cheat, he *is* cheating. Everything he ever said about voter fraud was cover for his interference in fair elections. He's evil and this only ends when he's in the ground. He will not stop himself and the AIPAC's minions will never hold him to account.

@freedomofpress@social.freedom.press No. We already have a robust system to separate secrets from not-secrets, it's called classification. If it doesn't warrant classification, it's not a secret.

@ceartas@mastodon.world They would rather lose than move Left. They've been very adamant about it.

@noodlemaz@mstdn.games @eff@mastodon.social That doesn't change that you don't own it. There are still plenty of restrictions on what you're allowed to do with that property because it isn't yours.

@ArrowbearMoore@toad.social It means Trump's fascists intend to destroy more history.

@ADHDruid@infosec.exchange @noodlemaz@mstdn.games @eff@mastodon.social This is where I have the problem is that the defacto situation experienced as buyers of either a license or a game is really the same. We are not conferred any real absolute ownership for having paid the price regardless. This problematic even if challenges go our way in court because that's just a matter of closing statutory loopholes. The donors rewrite the law, clearer. The legislature rubber stamps the patch on the hole where consumer rights still leaked through.

@VeroniqueB99@mastodon.social We should dig up all his golf courses for the evidence.

@eff@mastodon.social We never really owned the games or software anyway, it was only ever licensed to us.
