@ehproque@neopaquita.es @Landa@graz.social @futurebird@sauropods.win @cabel@social.panic.com that was Cory Doctorow (@pluralistic@mamot.fr) in a Guardian piece from January of this year: "AI is the asbestos in the walls of our technological society, stuffed there with wild abandon by a finance sector and tech monopolists run amok. We will be excavating it for a generation or more." https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-interactive/2026/jan/18/tech-ai-bubble-burst-reverse-centaur

@ranx@mastodon.social @stux@mstdn.social The "head bobble" is a really common South Asian thing. Obviously it's possible for anyone to make that gesture, but it's reasonable to take it as a sign that the person is likely from that part of the world (or grew up in a culture from that part of the world). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Head_bobble

@GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social Excerpt from an OpenAI C-suite meeting (I assume): "Well, we've very nearly cornered the 'douchebag', 'moron' and 'complete loser' markets...but we need to compete with GrokAI for the 'irredeemable sex pest' market, too!"

@sundogplanets the only way I see this going away is if we crowdfund them to force powerful people to live in perpetual bright hellish sunshine, around the clock, forever, until they do something to shut this thing down. And even then, they'll probably just pass self protective laws instead of actually fixing the problem.

@Natasha_Jay So they'll assemble these "models" from essentially "fossilized" pre-slop human-generated data, fold in reams of more recent gen-AI-slop, cram that all into black boxes owned and run by sociopathic billionaires, and use the output to make major decisions affecting the lives of millions/billions? Seems fine, what could POSSIBLY immediately and irrevocably go wrong for almost all of us?

@rbreich@masto.ai this would carry a lot more weight if it wasn't posted first on Bluesky. With all due respect, and I really do respect Robert Reich, it'd be real nice to see the big names putting their money where their mouths are.

@jik@federate.social so many times now I've hoped the Democrats would have their "Treebeard coming across the orcs destruction of Fangorn" moment, so they'd finally storm and destroy Isengard. But nope, no matter how bad it gets, it's always "hoom hoom, let's not be hasty..." and another six months of moot, with nothing to show for it. They tell us they're good, but in doing nothing, they're helping evil win.

@stevenscott I use a "note to self" in Signal. It works pretty well, though it's really best for quick "I want to open this link on a desktop later" or "I have a thing on my desktop and want to have it available on my phone" type stuff. Like looking through the website of a brick and mortar store, if I find a specific thing to then go and try to buy in person, I'll send myself a quick screenshot or the SKU or something, so I have it at hand.

@BlakeHamiltonCA@mstdn.ca it rained so hard, the hill sprouted a second peace tower. Wild. Maybe we don't need bullshit AI images to illustrate the climate change that's clearly happening around us, and putting that as the main illustration kinda cheapens the point? Especially considering the impact the AI industry is having on the climate?
