AI code bans may be impossible to enforce in the first place I hate this attitude that if a rule or standard can’t be enforced perfectly, we shouldn’t strive for it. We can’t (reasonably) run an OS free of proprietary software, does that mean the free software movement should just give up?

Duskfade is a perfectly pleasant 3D platformer with Kingdom Hearts-style combat that came out a couple of months ago. Once I’ve finished typing this paragraph, however, it will once again erase itself from my memory, because there’s nothing evocative about the name. I feel that says more about the game than the name. Like I find (scrolls through Steam library) Bullet Witch is a more memorable name than say Portal, but I can tell you a hell of a lot more about the latter. “Beyond that—I actually think that naming isn’t that important, since most people buy a game based on video footage, someone else playing it, or a recommendation. And we’ve seen in music and elsewhere that weird names are in no way a blocker to becoming successful.” Carless cites Steely Dan and Bananarama as examples. Do people really look at the videos on Steam? I always immediately click past them to look at the images. Failbetter’s next game is called Mandrake—the result of lots of collaborative longlisting, Flynn says. As well as encapsulating horticultural and sorcerer-type themes, it’s the name of the game’s main character. This would be like if Esoteric Ebb called itself ‘Cleric’, though given Wizards of the Coast is publishing a game called ‘Warlock: Dungeon & Dragons’ I suppose it wouldn’t be that out there. Good article though.

Likewise, it’s possible that it may be able to generate AI child porn without any actual child porn in its training dataset, but if it knows what children look like and what nudity looks like, then it could figure out what nude children look like. This is true and it’s what happened to OpenAI, there’s a section in Karen Hao’s Empire of AI about it. Remember, these companies (under) paid Kenyan workers and gave them PTSD to make sure CSAM and other undesirable content wasn’t in their training set.

Someone ‘Torturing’ LLMs in a Robot Prison Has Triggered the Dumbest Debate in AI Yet One of the most heated discussions occurring on X at the moment is about the ethics of a GitHub project in which a person is running Saw-like “torture” and “pain” experiments on a series of locally hosted large language models, causing a series of effective altruists and people who believe LLMs are sentient to beg GitHub to delete the project on the grounds that the AI is suffering and that this glorified text adventure game is somehow cruel. The saga is an outgrowth of several recent viral papers and blog posts that have sparked a wildly tiresome conversation about AI consciousness and the idea of “model welfare,” which is essentially worrying about the “mental health” of AI bots and agents.

Someone ‘Torturing’ LLMs in a Robot Prison Has Triggered the Dumbest Debate in AI Yet

The "AI Torture Chamber" has opened an upsetting and absurd window into the effective altruist obsession with "model welfare."

In Lemmy, object is the post itself — a Page (Note-like) object. Lemmy has no separate context abstraction: the top-level post is both the root object and, implicitly, the thread, so pointing object at the post is sufficient to identify the thread being locked. I’d just like to point out that in Lemmy 1.0 a Lock can also point to a Note (comment under a post in Lemmy lingo) so that only that comment and all its children are locked, while the rest of the thread remains unlocked. I believe Piefed already works like this as well.

Lemmy would need to start storing the context the context somewhere (otherwise it would be somewhat complicated), but that’s probably something that has to be done to implement f15d, so after that it wouldn’t be too much work.

They’re really leaning into the email similarities here, not a fan of moving the sidebar to the other side but I’ll get over it. My biggest wish on the UI front though is for them to add a threaded view for replies like what Bluesky has, navigating long threads on Mastodon can be really taxing just trying to follow reply chains.
