In the 1980’s, many doubted that totalitarianism could be defeated. Yet countless Poles refused to surrender their hopes for freedom and democracy.

In 2022, many people doubted Ukraine’s resilience, courage and unity. Yet, Ukraine continues to resist and fight.

But our vision goes beyond the war. We are already preparing Ukraine’s future.

Reconstruction is not only about repairing destruction - it is about building back a better Ukraine.

Today I am looking at issues that impact the daily lives of Europe’s citizens.

Drug trafficking and drug-related risks are growing in both complexity and scale. Over half of the EU’s most dangerous criminal networks are involved in trafficking, making this a strategic threat to our cities, our economies, and European citizens’ lives.

Tackling this problem requires coordinated action - at the local, national, EU, and international levels.

That’s why I brought together experts and leaders from key EU agencies to exchange views on the problem and consider possible ways forward.

I spoke today with His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, Sultan of Oman.

I expressed the EU's support and solidarity with Oman and all countries in the region affected by the war in Iran. We condemn all attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure in the region, without exception.

Restoring freedom of navigation and safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz is a shared priority. This is especially important given Oman’s position as a littoral state.

Diplomacy is the only sustainable way forward to solve this crisis, and Oman has a key role to play as a trusted mediator. The EU stands ready to support.
