I have good news / bad news on a #FreeBSD package I use security/pam_ssh_agent_auth is deprecated: This PAM module is abandonware: no code updates for 8+ years, no new releases for 6+ years. See security/pam_rssh or security/pam_ssh_agent for alternatives with very similar functionality. Have any of you switched already and have a recommendation? @mwl@io.mwl.io is responsible for me starting to use security/pam_ssh_agent_auth - perhaps he's already switched.

For my next trick, running mkjail upgrade -a to get the jails still on #FreeBSD 15.0 onto 15.1

mkjail will be greatly simplified under #pkgbase.

My VictoriaLogs instance just hit 10 million log entries over the past 7 days. How much space is that on disk? About 450MB [13:36 r730-01 dvl ~] % zfs list data04/victoria-logs NAME USED AVAIL REFER MOUNTPOINT data04/victoria-logs 449M 13.7T 449M /jails/logs/var/db/victoria-logs Or, according to du inside the jail, 426 MB: [13:37 logs dvl ~] % sudo du -ch -d 0 /var/db/victoria-logs 426M /var/db/victoria-logs 426M total

This is Nginx (dev.freshports.org) dumping access logs in JSON format, with syslog-ng sending them to another host (logs.int.unixathome.org) via TLS, and dumping them into Victoria Logs. Both "hosts" are FreeBSD 15.0 jails.

After about 15 minutes, I have a reverse Nginx proxy giving me access to the Victoria Logs UI. Never mind that 'unsupported path requested' and 'Failed to load logs' - I suspect that's a proxy issue. No data yet. Walking. Not running.

On Sunday, I upgraded from rsync-3.4.1 to rsync-3.4.3 Things broke, everywhere. It was my fault. I had a / where I should not have had one. It's all fixed now though: https://dan.langille.org/2026/05/26/usr-local-sbin-rrsync-error-unsafe-arg-usr-home-rsyncer-backups/

Let’s put the #FreeBSD patch levels right on the list of supported versions. Don’t force newbie to go looking at security announcements to know what patch level they should have. here’s a starting point courtesy RWP: git ls-remote https://git.freebsd.org/src.git | grep -F refs/tags/release/14.4

Have any of you run pkgbasify on a #FreeBSD jail?

Please tell me about it. I have about 80 jails eagerly awaiting your reply.

Based on the pkg-plist contents, yes, there is a big web service in there. Search for www/ in this pkg-plist: https://www.freshports.org/deskutils/py-paperless-ngx/#pkg-plist Seem promising.

FreshPorts -- deskutils/py-paperless-ngx: Community-supported supercharged version of paperless

Paperless-ngx is a document management system that transforms your physical documents into a searchable online archive so you can keep, well, less paper. Paperless-ngx is the official successor of the original Paperless and Paperless-ng projects.

More on #FreshPorts vs restrictions on search, etc.

Last night, I received a CPU alert regarding the database server.

I logged in and restricted search to logged-in users.

[13:15 aws-1 dvl ~] % sudo grep 'joe' /var/log/auth.log.1
May 4 00:57:46 aws-1 sudo[37761]: dvl : TTY=pts/0 ; PWD=/usr/home/dvl ; USER=root ; COMMAND=/usr/local/bin/joe /jails/nginx01/usr/local/etc/freshports/constants.local.php

This change means anyone not logged into FreshPorts with their FreshPorts account will get a 401 for any search.

This morning, the graph for Nginx requests graph looks like this.

Search was enabled again at May 4 13:14:37
