I did this one, in public, at a karaoke bar once and some people said I did OK. I haven't figured out if I believe them. But I'll take it, sort of. Pantera "Cemetery Gates" https://youtu.be/RVMvART9kb8 #JukeboxFridayNight #PersonalPlaylist

These guys were cool in '97. Our Lady Peace "Dirty Walls" https://youtu.be/dEJpE4NmKKk This album is older than that, but it deserves more ears. #JukeboxFridayNight #Dirty

Oh, we're doing break-up.heartbreak songs, now? My heart was broken at Form 2 (Year 8) school camp… I listened to this song a lot for the next wee while. Climie Fisher "Love Changes Everything" https://youtu.be/b8dy8tfUCEg #JukeboxFridayNight #PersonalPlaylist

A history that seems to repeat and repeat… Billy Joel "Allentown" https://youtu.be/BHnJp0oyOxs #JukeboxFridayNight #history

And then to mix things up… 🎶Eyeballs deep in muddy waters You're balls deep in muddy waters Ganja? Please! You must have been out your mind🎶 TOOL "The Pot" https://youtu.be/civuoU_NE38 #JukeboxFridayNight #Dirty

There's a piano. And it features fairly prominently. Guns n Roses "November Rain" https://youtu.be/8SbUC-UaAxE Bonus that it's one of the 5 GnR songs Shannon Hoon (Blind Melon) did some backing vocals on. #JukeboxFridayNight #PianoMusic

They also did: Goodshirt "Mud Sky" https://youtu.be/1Tiq7NmrOTs And that's all the obvious ones I have. I'm going to go watch a little TV. I may return and see if I can think of any more… #JukeboxFridayNight #Dirty

I assume electric keyboards count, too… Bo Burnham "Welcome To The Internet" https://youtu.be/k1BneeJTDcU #JukeboxFridayNight #PianoMusic

I've shared this, and the relevance, before. This song helped me process a particularly hard-hitting death. Plus, it has a cameo by one of my favourite authors, Joe Abercrombie (& his wife; smooching) who, I believe, edited it. Reef "Consideration" 🎶It's gonna be all right🎶 https://youtu.be/z5u2L24H1qQ #JukeboxFridayNight #PersonalPlaylist

Then, when I was 13, I stayed over at my friend's sleepover for her 13th birthday. I woke before anyone else and turned on the TV quietly to catch the Sunday morning music show. And so I discovered my favourite band for the next 4 years… (of course, now I know the album version much better than this single version, now) Candlebox "You" https://youtu.be/fyz-bOqmwIo #JukeboxFridayNight #PersonalPlaylist

The Youtube algorithm must've figured out what I'm after tonight, as it went on to suggest this song that features in my writing playlist and does, indeed, include a piano. Thirteen Senses "Into The Fire" https://youtu.be/VFroDCsVCeY #JukeboxFridayNight #PianoMusic

So, Extreme got really popular when "More Than Words" was released as a single. I liked it well enough, and "Hole Hearted", but it was the opening of this song that drew me in. "Flight of the Bumblebee" on guitar.

Why?

Because one of my brother's best mates recorded himself playing it just as well as this, and I had that recording on cassette.

https://youtu.be/B8ez2FUbHUg

And then I got into Extreme's "III Sides To Every Story" album. And eventually the rest of their discography.

Extreme "He-Man Woman Hater"

• This is not the Extreme song I wanted to share, but I couldn't figure out a personal enough experience for the other… other than once watching a reaction to it on Youtube and loving getting to experience it "for the first time" again. Sigh.

I adore this album. I won it on cassette from our local rock radio station (93RoxFM!), but went on to buy the CD and a Discman. I cleaned at my dad's work each Friday evening at the time (locksmiths), and each week I would start with this album. For years after I still associated certain songs with certain machines I would have been brushing key filings from when they played. This one would've played while I did the cutters to the right of the cash register/reception (from a worker's POV). LIVE "Freaks" https://youtu.be/mEUsJRVV-PE #JukeboxFridayNight #PersonalPlaylist

Here's a piano getting around town. Michelle branch "A Thousand Miles" https://youtu.be/Cwkej79U3ek #JukeboxFridayNight #PianoMusic

Over the past few years I've been listening to a lot of philosophy Youtube video essayists. They're cool and all, but sometimes it feels like there's something missing. Last year or so, I tuned in pretty deeply to Esoterica and No Nonsense Spirituality. Along with these influences, I have been developing the world-building for my next Fantasy series and really pondering how humans work, both in the real world and with regards spirituality and playing with such ideas as my story world takes shape. Anyway, it's led to this song being my "Song of 2026". It's just perfect for where I'm at. Tool "Lateralus" https://youtu.be/Y7JG63IuaWs #JukeboxFridayNight #PersonalPlaylist

Asaf Avidan "Gold Shadow" https://youtu.be/mqSXmdfumUE #JukeboxFridayNight #PianoMusic Now, yes, I am aware Asaf Avidan is Israeli. I'm pretty sure not Zionist, though, as far as I can tell.

And so ended my complacent enjoyment of popular music. I was about 12 when I heard this.

I remember thinking in the 1990s that this was about historical events, but it was much more contemporary (as my History teacher pointed out to an ignorant me). Late 1990s-early 2000s I used to love going out to dance along to these guys. They were really popular in Dunedin, the dance floor always full. My favourite memory is them playing on the stage that used to be int eh lower Octagon one summer evening. It rained (it's OK, there was a cover over the stage, so the band/instruments were fine), but that just added to the atmosphere. https://youtu.be/Ip2hyUVB8SY #JukeboxFridayNight #PersonalPlaylist

I vividly remember hearing this song for the first time. I'd just been into radiology and come out with some pretty clear scans of my first baby (not my first scan, but the first where he looked like a baby and not a bean). Came out from radiology, climbed into my husband's work ute… and when he started it, the radio played this. And I loved it.
