I just witnessed a co-working leaving the building for the last time as she retired today.
I heard a "woohoo" about from outside the building, then watched through my second floor window as she walked to her car and drove off giving a few honks on the way out the parking lot.
Loved that I got to witness her personal celebratory exclamations!
This is a really well researched and written article on map projections, the challenges of communicating geography clearly (round earth to flat paper), and the power and social implications associated with maps (and any communication message and medium).
Geographer approved!

I'm spending a couple days in #revelstoke. What a beautiful community. Looming large over the town is #MtBegbie.
15 years ago I summited Mt. Begbie in one of the most challenging hikes I've ever done. 1400m of climbing from 670m to 2090m to the treeline with our camp gear to base camp, then the next day a hike to the bottom of the glacier, up the glacier to reach and traverse a narrow horizontal ledge/cliff, then up the spine to the peak at 2710m. I remember being thankful for life insurance and would never have made it if a friend hadn't been leading our group.
Parked in town below I am in awe of what we accomplished.
Last night my flight home from a work trip was delayed by over 4 hours. My layover in the airport went from a comfortable 90 minutes to nearly 6 hours and I didn't get home until 230am.
Today I was wreck as I coped with less sleep than I need. But reflecting back on last night I realize how much I love those moments of being trapped in an airport held hostage to the airlines!
Pleases the geographer in me.
