@randahl@mastodon.social In fairness, Nixon actually did wind down the Apollo programs, because he couldn't afford both the Vietnam war and the moon landings. So there has been progress, in that now they can maybe afford both. :-) Universal healthcare is still a long way off, though.

First, 80 meters is not actually particularly deep for a pipeline. It's no problem for the specialized ships that do those things. And second, choosing a deep place has actually reduced the extend of the damage because the water had to run "uphill" inside the pipeline. If they had done it at a low water depth, a longer part of the pipeline would have been flooded.
