California is weaning itself off fossil gas, fast. Gas-fired electricity generation in California fell by 26% in the first half of 2026, as utility-scale solar, batteries and the new SunZia wind project feed power in via a dedicated transmission line. On its hottest day this year, 26 August 2026, renewables outproduced fossil gas for most of the peak. New Mexico flipped from fossil fuels to renewables in five years. In July 2021 its largest utility drew 83% of its power from coal and gas; this July, renewables supplied 62%. Solar carries the scorching days, batteries release stored sun through the evening, and wind picks up after dark. The cost of electricity has stayed below the US average the whole time. A tetanus-diphtheria vaccine that doesn’t need a fridge has passed its first human trial. UK scientists reformulated a licensed shot using trehalose, the sugar that lets desert plants survive without water, keeping it stable for up to two years at 30°C. In a trial involving 60 adults it matched two approved vaccines on safety and immunity. Gavi https://www.gavi.org/vaccineswork/fridge-free-vaccine-passes-first-human-trial-raising-hopes-hardest-reach

Water is returning to the African Sahel. After the catastrophic droughts of the late 20th century, aquifers from Senegal to Ethiopia are refilling, water tables in Niger have risen four metres, and Lake Chad has swollen to ten times its mid-1980s size. Near-extinct scimitar-horned oryx now number over 600, and farmers have nurtured 200 million trees back onto once-bare fields. After Decades of Drought, Water Is Rising in the African Sahel

Warming has brought extreme rain to the parched Sahel, which is seeing aquifers refill as monsoons grow stronger. But heavier downpours alone cannot explain the groundwater revival, say hydrologists, who believe efforts to harvest rainfall may also be paying dividends.

Scientists make the world’s most efficient solar panel. German researchers have built the most efficient solar panel ever, turning 34.4% of sunlight into electricity. That’s way higher than ordinary rooftop panels, which usually convert between 20-23%. This is a research breakthrough, not something you can buy for your roof yet, but it shows how much better solar panels may still become. Meet Rachel Ikemeh, the woman who almost single-handedly saved a species of primate. The Niger Delta red colobus was unknown to science until 1993 and lost 90% of its population within two decades, falling to an estimated 200 animals. Ikemeh’s community-led project, launched in 2013, now protects more than 80 km² and 16 threatened species, and its resident colobus population has doubled. This year she opened Nigeria’s first locally managed marine area. https://edition.cnn.com/world/africa/conservationist-rachel-ikemeh-nigeria-c2e-spc

A global trial has identified a better antibiotic for deadly staph infections. Published in NEJM, the trial, now involving over 6,000 people across 150 hospitals, found that cefazolin and, in some cases, penicillin, worked at least as well as flucloxacillin, the current standard treatment, but saw fewer deaths within 90 days and fewer cases of acute kidney injury. This is huge: staph infections kill up to 1 in 4 patients within three months. Three years after Raja Ampat’s walking shark won full legal protection, researchers off Sawinggrai village counted 2,462 per square kilometre, the densest population ever recorded for the genus. These reef-crawlers barely move, which makes them easy to wipe out but quick to recover where habitat holds and local villagers wade out to count them. The International Labour Organisation has adopted the first binding global labour standards for gig workers. Backed by 406 members, the new convention sets protections for platform workers in ride-hailing, food delivery and other app-based jobs, including measures on occupational safety, minimum pay and protection from unjustified termination. The standards will need ratification by individual countries before enforcement can begin. Sudan and South Sudan have eliminated maternal and neonatal tetanus, a major milestone for maternal and child health in two countries mired in conflict. In Sudan, vaccination campaigns between 2016 and 2019 reached more than 3.5 million women in high-risk districts. Midwife training, prenatal care and community outreach did the rest of the work to get to elimination thresholds nationwide. Western Australia is celebrating the success of its new wildlife crossings. Night vision cameras have recorded thousands of crossings by endangered species that are using a mix of 19 rope bridges, 24 underpasses and two land bridges built along the $1.46 billion Wilman Wadandi Highway, about 170 kilometres south of Perth. The WA government has released night-vision images showing scores of native wildlife are using rope bridges and underpasses along a $1.46 billion highway in the South West region, but not everyone is convinced.

Renewables cut European power prices by 24% on average. Wind and solar expansion reduced wholesale electricity prices by an average 24.2% across 19 European countries between 2023 and 2025, weakening the link between power costs and volatile gas markets. Solar alone has saved countries in the bloc over €3 billion since March 2026. Sightings of humpback whale “super-groups” skyrocket, with researchers documenting a record 304 individuals in a single day off South Africa. Sightings of large aggregations have jumped from 10 to 65 per year in just five years, driven by recovering populations and abundant prey. Scientists say the phenomenon signals a major conservation success, with wider benefits for marine ecosystems through nutrient cycling and ocean health. Railway solar project turns unused track space into energy
Switzerland is testing a simple idea: lay removable solar panels between train tracks to generate power from space that normally sits unused. A pilot in Buttes has installed 48 panels over 100 metres, producing about 16,000 kWh a year while trains keep running. If it scales, rail lines could double up as clean energy sources, without taking up extra land. SNCF https://www.groupe-sncf.com/en/innovation/solar-power-between-rails

Mummies with golden tongues, and a piece of Homer tucked inside one of them. That’s what archaeologists just pulled out of a Roman-era tomb at Al-Bahnasa in Egypt, the ancient city once called Oxyrhynchus. Four of them had metal tongues placed in their mouths. The idea was that the dead would need them to speak in the afterlife. Inside one mummy’s wrappings, the team found a scrap of papyrus carrying a passage from Book II of Homer’s Iliad. COP31 hosts put electrification at centre of climate talks. Turkey and Australia want electrification to be a headline target at COP31, with Turkey’s environment minister calling for electricity to meet 35% of final global energy demand by 2035, up from about 20% today. The focus is transport, heating, industry and clean cooking: sectors where fossil fuels still dominate despite cheaper renewables, EVs and heat pumps. Across wealthy countries, dementia risk has dropped around 13% per decade since the late 1980s, helped by better blood pressure control, lower cholesterol, less smoking and more education. This feels surprising, because dementia cases are rising as populations age, even as age-specific risk falls. We aren’t as helpless as we think either - a 2024 Lancet commission estimated that up to 45% of dementia could be prevented or delayed. Vox https://archive.md/dYtGl#ShareGoodNewsToo

A new philanthropic initiative called Intercept has launched with $500 million to develop preventative products (a shot, a nasal spray or pill) in combination with air-cleaning technologies to combat colds, flu, RSV, coronaviruses and other respiratory viruses. The goal is to push at least two products through Phase 2 trials, while building real-world evidence for filtration, UVC and other clean-air tools in schools, offices and public transport. https://blog.interceptfund.com/p/ending-respiratory-infections #ShareGoodNewsToo

@ombialik@mastodon.world @cks@mastodon.social Yep, reusing Rome for propaganda was perennial long before the Renaissance. But the Renaissance did change its political valence & make it even more competitive than before, greatly increasing how many different powers were playing the Rome card at once, and how ut connected to aspirational social mobility & library building.
