Hi everyone, I'm just your average former gifted kid trying (and mostly failing) to hold onto my last shred of faith for humanity... As well as my livelihood. I'm addicted to media because skynet is real and its name is youtube, and because Video Games help me cope with my stressful job.

Unapolagetic Linux user. I took the FOSS pill and didn't look back. Fuck you, Microsoft!

I started my Fediverse life on pettingzoo.co, but now I've migrated here because it's closing down.

Idea for a Vine that just flashed into my head, years after Vine died:

A: (carefully examining a small glass cup with no markings) "is this dishwasher safe?"
B: "we're about to find out!" (Takes the cup and tosses it into the dishwasher)
(One frame of explosion coming from the dishwasher)
(Smash cut to news report with the smoldering wreckage of a house in the background)
Reporter: "we are here live at the devastating aftermath of some dumbass trying to dishwash something that is not dishwasher safe"

Recently, while I was on an outing in town, I saw someone reclining in a wheelchair. It took me a moment to realize that was odd, since to my knowledge wheelchairs aren't supposed to lean that way, so I looked a little closer, and I realized their wheelchair had an extra pair of wheels, really tiny ones that were raised a bit off the ground, for the express purpose of leaning back on and reclining.

And I thought that was pretty cool.

As a client services rep, the bane of my existence is those customers who give you not enough information to be able to help them, so you ask a clarifying question to get the info you need to help them, but then instead of answering that question, they turn it upside down, flip it on its side a few different ways, and then answer that version of the question, perfectly avoiding giving you any helpful info.

There's a mechanic that I saw once in a particular past version of Tinker's Construct, which I am legitimately disappointed I've never seen in any other game or mod that I can remember: ammunition with durability.

For context. Tinker's Construct is a pretty damn popular mod for Minecraft, which adds modular tools and weapons; instead of turning sticks and iron ingots into a fully formed pickaxe, you can create a separate tool handle, pickaxe head, and some kind of binding to put them together, assemble them (potentially mixing and mismatching parts made of different materials) into a combined tool that has special stats and abilities depending on what it's made of, and then you can modify that tool further to change and enhance its abilities. Also when it runs out of durability it just becomes unusable and can be repaired, instead of evaporating. I think the popularity kinda fell off in recent years, but it had HUGE popularity a while ago.

Tinker's construct has been through a number of iterations, and in one of them, it added a bunch of ranged weapons to the list of extra tools and weapons it can make. Bows, crossbows, shuriken, a few other things. This particular iteration also added ammo for these weapons (which in the suriken's case was the shuriken itself) as a modular tool that you can make. And this? It was really, really good.

For further context: in most Minecraft mods, a ranged weapon uses stackable ammo; each shot is a discrete item in your inventory, that is completely used up when you fire (and potentially can be retrieved depending on what it is) and if you run you, you need to craft more. This is kind of a pain; it takes up extra inventory space, you can never really get more than 64 shots in one inventory slot unless you invest in a special container like a quiver, and arrows (among the more common ammo items to be used) require flint and feathers to make, which are niche items that are annoying to produce. Some ranged weapons will use electricity or even their own durability as ammo, which for the most part solves these issues, but isn't very interesting.

But, if you can craft your own special ammo, which has durability the same way your tools do, which you can repair with the same materials you're already gathering instead of re-crafting it with niche materials you have to go out of your way to get, which you can give special abilities by making it out of certain materials and can modify further after making it, which keeps its special effects and modifications through repairs...

Well, you see why this is cool?

The damage of your ranged attacks, how much ammo you can carry, the special effects you can employ at range, all these scale along with the rest of your gear. You have to use up inventory space, but this is more effectively balanced against other things you can put in your inventory since you can fit more than 64 shots in one inventory slot. You can even take multiple types of ammo; maybe you can make a really useful arrow but it doesn't have a lot of durability, so you make another arrow that hits softer but lasts for way more shots, as a backup. It adds several layers of complexity to how you approach ranged combat, and makes the whole thing a lot more appealing in general.

I've seen maybe one other minecraft mod, and NO other games try to do this same sort of thing. And I'm just... Flabbergasted. It works on so many levels! Why not?

I'd love to see a classic heist movie, except the "crew" of highly skilled misfits is a bunch of poor guys who knew each other in college, and the budget for gear, bribes, and generally everything they'll actually be using for said heist totals 10 bucks and a chicken sandwich from Popeye's. Like, part comedy of errors (the heisters are so thoroughly unimpressive that nobody takes them seriously, which opens opportunities for them), part wow these dipshits are actually weirdly good at this. Like if I was a Netflix exec and you pitched that movie to me, I would be all in.

So here's a fun fact that I'm delighted to have learned: apparently, there are, like, way more fish in the sea than we thought. Like ridiculously so. Over ten times our estimates in some cases. And giant squid? You have no idea. Just from how frequently any sign of giant squid was discovered anywhere in the world, we assumed they were extremely rare. Turns out no, they're swarming the fuck out of the deep sea and we had no idea for the longest time. So, how did we find this out? Well, it starts with those same giant squid I just mentioned. It was known that sperm whales feed on giant squid, so some marine biologists started checking the stomach and stool contents of sperm whales, and what they found didn't make much sense. Like 70% of the whales' diets was giant squid. Which would require there to be millions of giant squid. But we rarely ever see giant squid, and all we ever see of giant squid are bloated washed-up corpses, so that doesn't make sense, right? It's gotta be a weird statistical anomaly. So this was more or less dismissed as a theory. Then, a particular marine biologist managed to get her hands on a giant squid eyeball (the size of a G-dang basketball by the way) and did some careful analysis, and found that their eyes had a surprising visual range, way longer than the cameras on deep sea drones we'd been sending down to their supposed habitats and finding none of them. So, new theory: the squids are just hiding from us. The cameras use really bright lights to be able to see in the benthic depths, and this intense light is scaring the squids away from further away than the cameras can see them. This theory is considered silly by most, but she does have the biological data from the eyeball, so eventually she's able to convince people to build a really, really expensive deep sea drone with a really, really powerful camera that can see clearly with barely any light, and can see in lights that, according to the data, these giant squids can't. So, they build this drone, they send it down expecting to see something maaaaybe within a couple days. They see a squid ninety seconds in. Then another. Then another. There are so many fucking squids "Millions" is discovered to be an underestimate. They are fucking EVERYWHERE. There's no escaping them. They're seeing like dozens of squids an hour. Now that we're no longer dropping the fucking sun into their living room, they're no longer running for the valleys as soon as we get close. They tested this out in other oceanic environments, and it's the same deal; there's so much shit than we thought there was, because every time our cameras get close, they've already fled from the mysterious orb of baleful deathlight descending from the unknown heavens. They even dipped this drone into what we thought was the least biologically dense area ON THE PLANET, just a complete ecological dead zone, and once the scary sun camera was gone, we saw so many god damn species of fish, it turned out to be one of the MORE ecologically diverse areas on the planet. Like, not a contender for MOST, but it was up there. Crazy biological diversity. So many fish that humans just never had the opportunity to witness. So yeah, TL;DR it turns out the ocean is WAY more full of life than we thought, we were just throwing a nine bang into the fish party's living room and wondering why there was nobody around after it finished exploding.

I can't believe I never thought to add peanut butter to my ramen broth before now. This shit slaps so hard. I can't even taste how shitty the Maruchan noodles are. I don't know if I'm going to be able to go back to eating instant ramen without peanut butter, this is so good.

Little caesar's pizza is weird. It's hard to explain what I mean by that. Best I can do is like, I can taste quality, ok? If you give me food, I can savor it, and be like "oh yeah, this is high-quality stuff, they used good ingredients and good technique" or "this is really low quality, like really cheap bottom of the barrel stuff."
That in mind: by my measure, the pizza at Little Caesars has no quality to speak of. It doesn't taste *good.*
What it does taste, is delicious. Their pizza is very tasty, and very satisfying to eat, even though it tastes noticeably cheap and crappy.
So yeah, I like little Caesars a lot. The pizza is delicious, and very cheap. You'll be hard pressed to find a better deal on pizza.

I'm getting increasingly attached to a silly character concept I came up with off the cuff: a demon (or devil or what have you) bound into service by a poorly-worded contract. Known by such quotes as:
"I offered that bastard two wishes. They used the first wish to get a damn good lawyer."
"Call me what you will. My contract does not require me to divulge my true name. And if you ask for it, I WILL slap you. Mister Smithson calls me Mendy."
"I'm supposed to be on vacation right now, you know? If we lived in a just cosmos, I wouldn't be here; I'd be reclining by blackspit lake, sipping a nice hot glass of rotmeth, listening to the soothing sound of a freshly-peeled lemure."
"Oh, well excuse me for forgetting you're a pansy who needs a special tool to grab metal that's a bit too red."

I'd like to see a Wreck-It Ralph short where there's some kind of retro celebration at the arcade, so the arcade owner brings in, among other classic rented cabinets, turbotime. And naturally, after being plugged in, Turbo decides to head into the circuit breaker and mingle with the rest of the game characters, who are all absolutely terrified of him because of what the previous Turbo did. I imagine it probably ends with Ralph and Vanillope sitting down and having a pleasant chat over some of Tapper's root beer, and helping explain to the despondent Turbo why everyone's so afraid of him. Or maybe they're still too shaken up by when the last Turbo tried to kill them and somebody else delivers that explanation. I just kind of want to see how that whole thing plays out.

Why did Bubsy, of all failed attempts to make a new mascot from that time period, stick? Like, I can see why Blinx and Vexx and Awesome Possum and Aero the Acro-Bat and whatnot fell into obscurity, but why out of all those did Bubsy manage to stay relevant? Were sales for the first two Bubsy games just that good? Was it The Room syndrome from Bubsy 3D? Was it something else? Like I'm genuinely confused here.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining; Bubsy 4D looks absolutely kickass, and I enjoyed Bubsy 1 anyway. I'm just like. Out of all the cut-rate half-assed new mascot attmepts, why is Bubsy the one that's popular enough to get a revival?

I have a very silly tattoo idea. For context, my family has a semi tradition of getting commemorative tattoos when we travel; a while ago I went on a trip that we thought would be taking me to Homer, Alaska, but it wound up not going to Homer specifically.

Still, the bit of Homer excitement we had gave me the idea of Homer Simpson, in a toga - like Homer the poet might have worn - hitting a home run in front of a certain monument from Homer, Alaska. So, Homer, as Homer, hitting a homer, in Homer.

The only thing I haven't been able to decide about this tattoo: where should I put it?

Concept: in this fantasy setting, an adventurer (or adventuring party) hears of a nearby kingdom with a mad king problem, and so resolves to help the people overthrow the mad king.

When they arrive at the border, they say they've come to defeat the mad king, but the guard just gives a knowing laugh and lets them past without incident.

When they stop for a rest at an inn, they again say they've come to defeat the mad king, but are surprised when this prompts the folks they're drinking with to call a toast to the mad king. Still, they offer no resistance to the apparent goal of taking the mad king down, and wish the adventurer(s) luck.

When they arrive at the palace, they draw weapons and declare to the palace guards they have come to defeat the mad king. The guards have a good laugh, and let the party through without resistance. When asked why they're so unconcerned with this incursion, the guard captain just says "you'll see."

Finally, they enter the king's chamber, to find him in the midst of discussing a subsidy plan to help with a grain shortage some parts of the kingdom are facing. The king asks them to wait a moment, and when discussions are finished, introduces himself as Mad King Ricker. The party is confused; why does this man refer to himself as mad king? When they heard of a mad king they had expected a violent tyrant who rules through blood, but he seems to be a quite well-adjusted and effective ruler, intent on doing right by his people. So, naturally, they ask: why are you called the Mad King?"

"Why? Because you had to be mad to want to be king of this country! You wouldn't believe how many things were going wrong before my era, and of course, someone would always blame the king, and if he didn't fix things fast enough - and how could he, too many problems all making each other worse - that's when the assassins get moving. People were playing hot potato with the crown; a kingdom needs a king, but nobody wanted to be it. Except me; I was the only one who thought he was hot enough shit to actually ASK for the crown! And it turned out, I was right! Folks are calling this the kingdom's golden age. Ask anyone, they're all singing the praises of Mad King Ricker!"

I feel like homebrewed retro games are gonna make a surge. A creation kit for random folks to make their own N64 games got released recently. apparently the same sort of thing exists for gameboy because someone released a gameboy-compatible rom for a fanmade gameboy animal crossing game on itch.io. (link by the way: https://richterwilker.itch.io/animal-forest-gb-folk ) And I'm not even looking for this stuff specifically, it just rolled onto my dash. I just get the feeling this is gonna go off sometime soon, if it hasn't already.

I don't wanna get up, I don't wanna go back to work tomorrow, I don't even wanna move. I just wanna curl up on the couch like a pampered kitty and sleep aaaaaaaallllll week, occasionally getting up for a few hours at a time to do some eating or gaming or watching fun things.
I hate that I have to spend 40 hours a week doing stressful work... I wish we lived in a more just world where garbage like this just didn't happen.

Final Fantasy 7 remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth are both on a ridiculously good sale right now (75% off and 70% off respectively, which is crazy for a AAA title) and I am like. I'm legitimately having a hard time deciding whether or not to get them. The filesize is *rough,* but I've had kind of a passive interest in playing the re-done FF7 for a while now, and this is in all likelihood the best chance I'm ever gonna get to act on that interest. But I need a second opinion because I legit can't decide myself.

Is there anyone here who has played FF7 remake and/or rebirth? Should I spring? On just one or both?

I have been informed that there exists a variety of tomato that grows extremely small. To the point that each individual tomato is the size of, like, a blueberry. And they're really sweet and tasty, but harvesting them is a pain.

I can't help but assume this is how tomatoes used to look before we domesticated them, or at least very close to it. I have no proof, obviously, but it just makes sense that a "wild" tomato would have a much smaller berry, right?
