RE: https://mathstodon.xyz/@highergeometer/117415296386994698 The thing is, to win, OpenAI doesn't have to get good at math research. They just have to make it nonviable for humans to work in math research

RE: https://mastodon.scot/@kim_harding/116108957641748718 I want this but as a Linux distribution. I don't think I'm asking for much here. I am just asking for the "open source community" to be to the left of Goldman Sachs

I believe that at some point in the next ten years, a "brain computer interface" will exist that detects some kind of neuron activity, runs it through a machine learning model, and translates it into LLM agent actions. It won't be anything as clean as "you think a sentence and it types it". It will be something one level lower than "prompting an AI". You do some vague mental thing and it translates into a result on the computer. I believe this product will not...

RE: https://infosec.exchange/@kevinrothrock/117395210320707564 Also like. Logically. If someone were, hypothetically, to contract the plague. Wouldn't "at the research center where they study plague" be literally the best possible place for it to happen. Like they already know exactly what to do. They've been studying it. I imagine if I were like, head of a software company, or shift manager at a Tim Hortons. And somebody died of the plague. I bet I'd botch that whole situ...

RE: https://mastodon.social/@dansup/117394700079685766 Uh oh I'm very serious about this, move the compose box out of the left column (or otherwise cause the compose box to cover up content) and I walk. I don't get to move off mastodon.social due to mastodon never actually implementing a migration feature but I can definitely find an alternate frontend

RE: https://wandering.shop/@joshsutphin/117389466966227280 (With no hostility intended toward Josh here—) I am literally begging all of you to stop giving Spotify money. There are so many alternatives. "A music streaming service" is not a hard problem to solve and like 8 companies have solved it. The company that makes your phone OS has solved it (this is true for both major phone OSes).

: **doesn't load** : Well, that's understandable. It's a small service operated by volunteers, and amidst what is effectively a permanent DDOS by AI scrapers, we can't really expect they've got the resources of Github. : **doesn't load**

The existence of RedoxOS and ReactOS implies the existence of a RedactOS. Now if you go and look, you'll find there's no evidence of a RedactOS ever existing. And of course that's exactly what you'd expect https://chitter.xyz/@gutmunchies/117379709019788043

Very occasionally I encounter someone huffily arguing "well why does everyone complain about the water/energy expenditure of AI but they just look the other way on the water/energy expenditure of FARMING". Well it's pretty obvious, it's because if we had to give up exactly one of "generative AI" or "food", we'd rather have food

Bluesky is having an odd little debate about use of the phrase "stochastic parrot" and how it appears to be the one phrase that just sends AI advocates into a rage, and I'm really torn, because while I'm in favor of making Ai advocates angry, I sincerely believe that parrots are capable of both understanding concepts and using language to intentionally communicate about their understandings of concepts. And I believe this is not true of LLMs

To answer the article's question: It is unethical to run a program that "tortures" an LLM because in order to do this you must run the LLM and it is unethical to run an LLM 🤷♀️

What is the relationship between the PCRE and PCRE2 libraries? Is one an API version 1.0 and the second an API version 2.0, or is PCRE2 a hostile fork, or is PCRE2 a new ground-up reimplementation with a different API by a different team?

Rust wgpu now has a .agents/skills, a .claude/skills, an AGENTS.md, and a CLAUDE.md. Increasingly wondering if my goal of living in a way that I never benefit from the actions of generative AI users and generative AI users never benefit from the actions of me is going to inherently mean never using hardware-accelerated video on a computer again.

Okay. Linux tolerators. I have a question. Which of these two hypothetical syntaxes for a configuration file do you like better? If you like one or the other better, do you like it *so* much better you'd say something like "I would find this categorically easier to read and work with". Or do you just like it better.

The reason I assume bad faith on the part of AI-curious project maintainers is because I keep having conversations with people who are trashing AI all over the place and then they let slip that they're actually using AI already, sometimes a *lot* of AI, it's just they have some elaborate rationalization where the AI *they* use is good and effective and it's only everyone else who is using AI wrong, and producing slop.
