I'd be all like, "well, there's lots of things that could have killed this person. I'm going to proceed assuming it was something other than the bubonic plague". And that would be the wrong move

@mcc@mastodon.social in the USA, I'd take a Tim Hortons or Waffle House manager as crisis head over any FEMA political appointee

@mcc@mastodon.social A fair bit of media I've seen on this treats Russia having a plague case at all as some Sign. > "Between 2000 and 2023, between zero and 17 cases of human plague were reported in the U.S. each year, according to the most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention." Questions about whether Russia's "up to something" might be valid, but the existence of plague alone isn't much to go on. https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/6131883-plague-cases-still-occur-in-the-us-heres-where/

@mcc@mastodon.social A combination of incompetence and indescribable stupidity… and that is what governing the USA currently. What could possibly go wrong…

@mcc@mastodon.social Also of course media losing their shit "because plague" when it's not a dead disease. There are several cases every year but of course most of them happen to brown people so nobody knows about it?

@mcc@mastodon.social I agree... and would point out that this was reported as "#pneumonic_plague" (lung infection) not "bubonic" (lymph node infection). In a nutshell this means the victim likely breathed in the #plague #spores rather than being injected (bitten) with the #bacteria. An #N95 #mask could have / should have prevented this. So simple precautions failed or were not followed. It also makes me think of "#weaponization" (making spores more infective via the air). See all the press about the #Anthrax attack in DC several years ago for more on this. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plague_(disease)

@mcc@mastodon.social It is the same outrage against the China labs studying the covid viruses really. I highly doubt the lab was studying the covid/plague for bioweapons. If they were we would not have heard about it in the first place or only hear about it many years later. So yes this is all easy points for the current admin to push anti Russia and anti foreign ideas. Also we had some plague outbreaks in the Congo in 2020 which raised to national attention but folks forgot about it already. See https://mechpath.com/2021/11/18/2020-plague-outbreak-in-the-democratic-republic-of-congo/ .
